I recently updated to OS X 10.1.5 (from OS 9.2.2) and was frequently getting a bunch of white text on black background showing up telling me to continue (c) or reboot (r). If I pressed c more black text would show up with the last line always ending up as "we're hanging here.". Is this the "open firmware" that people talk about so much (sorry, I'm not an expert).

Anyway, I eventually though I had tracked the problem down to a problem with a bad DIMM. I had three DIMMS installed, 64, 32, and 64 in the three slots. I removed the 64 from the third slot (farthest right slot) and ran my computer for several days with just the 64 + 32 installed. All seemed well except for it being horrendously slow as you can imagine. So, I chalked it up to a bad DIMM and ordered a new 128 MB DIMM to replace it. Well, I just got the new 128 MB DIMM and plunked it into the empty slot. After a few hours, the black screen of death reappeared.

Is it possible this is a problem with the third slot on the motherboard? To test this, I removed the 32 MB DIMM from the middle slot and moved the new 128 MB DIMM to the middle slot. Now I've been running for > 8 hours with no problem with 64+128+empty. I believe this proves that the 128 MB DIMM I just bought is fine and that the problem lies with the third slot.

Another funny quirk, Apple System Profiler is not reporting the RAM properly. I remember under OS 9 ASP used to report the slot and the amount of RAM shown in the slot. Now it only lists one slot and one DIMM under OS X. The total RAM shown is correct but the individual DIMMs are not listed.

I hope somebody has some advice to share with me so I can utilize all the good RAM I have!

You might have a bad slot after all, but that doesn't explain the error messages.

I believe the problem is likely an incompatible mix of DIMMS I had a PC100-333, PC100-322 and a PC66-222 DIMM. The mix was just too much for the poor machine I guess. I removed the PC66-222 DIMM and all seems fine. It was only a 32MB DIMM anyway so I still have 192MB to power my rocket.
