the very fundamental function i miss in iPhoto is the ability to place type on a photo. Am I overlooking something? Or is there a plug-in that grants that sort of functionality? I hate having to go to PS or Elements to accomplish that simple task.

Well, I'm trying to figure out precisely what you want to do - I mean, if it's a one time thing, or if you want the photo to permanently have a caption on it. If this is meta-data you want to apply to the photo, or if it needs to be printed ON the photo - are you emailing it, or sending it some other way?

periodically i need to apply type to an image area. Overprint, knockout, doesn't matter; sometimes it's for email, sometimes for an image to be posted on a website. It's not an uncommon function, but it's lacking in iPhoto.

You know that you can set iPhoto to open an image in an external editor when you select it? That might help?
