I was wondering when this was gonna hit the lounge. I don't really have an opinion on the possibility one way or the other, but it seems to me unlikely that Apple would co-brand a Mac, even if they do so with the U2 iPod. Which isn't all that flashily U2-ish. I suppose if Mr. Cent's foundation has a not-particularly-thuggin' name, Steve might go for it. But I doubt it.

I don't know if this would be the best choice. U2 was okay because they were kind of a neutral band. The worst you could accuse Apple of would be support children in Africa or whatever U2's pushing. But if they pair with 50, they could be accused of support gang violence, sex, drugs, racism, all that stuff. I don't think it would be the best business move.

Yeah, but if Apple has been approached and chooses to forgo the offer there might well be charges of racism.

I hate racism coming from the minorities, because there's nothing the majority can do about it with once again being called racists.

How would Apple look bad for manufacturing a computer designed for inner city school kids?

Love or hate 50¢, it's a good cause.

Why does everyone suddenly "need" a computer. From Starving kids in Africa to poor inner-city kids in america. What do these kids need to google exactly?

I think it is better to buy them books or safer/cleaner schools.

It seems these days that computer skills will get you farther than real reading/writing/math skills.

Try hand writing a four page report.

Because they can't compete against the kids that do have computers.

The kids with a computer can write a paper at home, have their spelling checked, add pictures to their presentation, receive email from their teachers [very popular now], work collaboratively via the internet on projects, etc. etc. etc.

I agree that the computer isn't the solution to all education problems, but it does level the playing field a little.

Computers usually don't help children with their education needs. In reality what the kids do is spend all day on the internet (like us), and the constant barrage of text and information lowers your IQ by about 10 points.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/04/22/text.iq/

Why not spend it on something more useful, like new buildings to accomodate growing numbers of students and lower the student:teacher ratio?

I swear that public education is going to hell in a hand basket.

Let me expound, using an example seen on World's Wildest Police Videos or one of those shows on Spike.

The scene: a cop sitting with a laser gun has clocked a car doing 6 over the limit in a residential area. He proceeds to follow the car for several miles with lights and siren on, car takes lots of wild turns and such, and ends up parked on the opposite side of the road. Black male jumps out of the car and runs toward the police car yelling profanities. Officer (white male, mid forties) gets out with gun drawn telling the man to calm down. Huge black female gets out of the passenger side and starts screaming about why does he have a gun out you're only doing this cause he's black, then the black male yells about how he wasn't speeding etc. The officer shows him the laser (after explaining that the reason the black male's radar detector didn't go off was because he was using a laser) that he was going 6 over the limit.
Black man: Six over the limit?? I wasn't speeding! You're just doing this because I'm a black man.
Officer: Sir, you were speeding.
Huge female: You're a racist! You only pulled us over cause we're black!

I gotta give the cop props for keeping his cool. He called for backup and kept his cool while they threw a lot more worse insults at him.

I agree. We found it fits the basic principles of what music is, and it's just a matter of personal taste, but some people refused to admit that taste is subjective and everyone must accept their point of view.

Ah, the 'I'll make broad, sweeping generalizations about a group of people and say it's true for all of them' ploy. Nice. Insult any type of personal preference, and you're bound to get a few who will defend themselves.

That didn't help your case. Actually, using WWPV or Spike as a reference makes you look worse. Besides, such a story is irrelevant.

How's this: "I hate racism coming from the majority, because there's nothing the minorities can do about it with once again being called racists." Makes no less sense, right?

Besides, choosing terms like "the minorities" is pretty ignorant. Imagine a politician using such terminology.

People falsely accuse others of racism, harassment, sexism, a bunch-of-phobias, and a-bunch-of-other-isms all the time. Don't get worked up over it.

The story stands. It shouldn't be any more or less credible if I had seen it in person, or if I had neglected to mention how I saw it. It's not like I'm quote a well know biased author, I'm talking about a video-documented event. It happened in real life, and it's an example of how minorities (yes, i said it. i'm referring to a group of people that does not make up the majority of the population...a minority) unrightly accuse the majority of racism. I'm not saying it never happens for real. I'm saying that there's no difference between when they try and take advantage of us by pointing out race, and when the majority 'puts them down' because of race.

And I think calling someone 'ignorant' because they choose not to adhere to an ever changing and unwritten set of social standards (political correctness) is...well...ignorant.

I am really SHOCKED by some of the comments in my thread. It was immediately derailed off the face of the earth with racial and musical comments. WTF???

I posted this because IMHO for years macs have not been accessable to many mainly because of price. Now, someone (50 Cent) who is not really known for many positive things is trying to do something positive for other ppl (and get more macs in more homes) and all I really see is hate because of it.

I am confused by these reply's. One minute everyone is throwing a fit because dell or whoever won a school contract and not Apple. Now, 50 tries to get macs into more homes and everyone is against it???????? They don't need computers?????

I think it is great that 50 is trying to work with Apple to get macs into more homes, afterall, isn't that what we (mac users) have always wanted? Mac's to get more exposure.

Sorry about SP. im in a hurry

Are you really that naive? really? 50 cent wants more publicity and his motives are not at all selfless. This is a way he can attach himself to one of the most recognized brands around so that he can more effectively sell records that glorify violence to the very children he supposedly cares about. I'm sure he's thought about the publicity as well. I might think differently if the computers 50 cent is trying to get to these kids does not bear his name or reference him in any way--but I kinda doubt that.

If he really wanted to help disadvantaged kids get computers there are far cheaper and more effective ways to do it.

No it isn't. It's an example of one man accusing a cop of racism. He wasn't accusing "the majority" of anything.

You would be quite wrong, then. I think white supremacy is much worse than trying to get out of a speeding ticket by making the cop uncomfortable. Sorry you can't see that.

I don't like false accusations any more than you. But I don't think it's worth the kind of response you submitted. Besides, statements like "they try and take advantage of us" falsely frame the political debate as "black versus white."

It's not about political correctness (a term I never use, I might add). Your posts reek of an "us versus them" mentality, with dismissive tone and terminology like "the minorities," topped off by presenting the views of "the majority" as if they were unanimous and unimpeachable. They are neither.

Let me focus on exactly what was wrong with your original post. Here it is again: I hate racism coming from the minorities, because there's nothing the majority can do about it with once again being called racists.

So you hate racism coming from the minorities? Do you also hate racism coming from the majority?

So you don't think the majority can "do anything about it" after a false accusation. So does that mean minorities can "do something about it?"

I have much distaste for false accusations of anything, whether or not it comes from racial minorities, whether or not it includes claims of racism.

You, on the other hand, seem to have an axe to grind over this issue. Why?

No, it makes less sense. There is a widespread perception that it is OK to be against the "majority" and that isn't considered racist. You can insult white people up and down and accuse them all of being racists or say there's a huge white conspiracy to oppress blacks and people will not be particularly outraged — not nearly as much as if you'd said the same things the other way around.

I hope Apple doesn't do it. It is a terrible idea.

There is way too much stigma (that is by no means misplaced) in any association with rap or rappers. Worthy cause or no, this will hurt Apple in the long run. And before you accuse my of being a typical capitalst who cares about the bottom line (as though thats something to be ashamed of) considere thsese things--

1) 50 Cent himself really isn't motivated by charity. He wants to cash in. He even said about his muscal career that its not about music, its about business. If he really had charitable motives, he would be buying a whole bunch of low cost Macs and donating them to the underprivelidged.

2) I truly feel that this would hurt Apple's bottom line--the less Apple makes, the less it can "be charitable." A charitable effort is only effective as long as it doesnt collapse under its own weight.

3) Related to point 1, if he really wanted to help those kids, he wouldn't care about having his name on the product line.

Make no mistake, this is not a charitable effort. It is just another chance for a rich man to get richer under the guise of something worthwhile, and it will, in the end, hurt us all. Now who's the real "capitalist pig?"

Per your point 1), loki74, since we don't know any details, we can't discount the scenario wherein Apple designs a lower-cost Mac, and Mr. Cent's foundation subsidizes part of that. If he's talking about getting his foundation involved, that seems like the likeliest case. As in, "Here, Apple, make a computer at a low cost, then you lower the purchase price by making less of a margin and The 50 Cent Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good will lower the price even more by pitching in for some of it, and then it'll be affordable to qualified purchasers."

I don't know. I mean, I'm sure the branding thing they have in mind is with this foundation, not with 50 Cent or G-Unit, and they're probably not talking about thugged-out case design or anything. But I still don't see Apple co-branding a Mac.

But who knows. They did do Flower Power and Blue Dalmation on Steve's watch.
