The one-box-solution is the VGA to ADC Conversion Box by Gefen.

Let me know if your DVI to ADC (from Apple?) worked with the VGA to DVI.

I tried everything and nothing short of the $400 geffen adapter will apparently work.

I'm putting off the 12" PB purchase and will wait until an aluminum 15" comes out.
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

???

Again, you need that $400 adapter to connect that 12" alu powerbook to a flat panel display (that's the problem I was having).

If you want to hook it into a VGA monitor, that's doable. All laptops from apple include that VGA adapter.

If that wasn't what you were asking, please clarify.

Yeah...I don't have any idea what Apple's thinking. If they want to push those flat panels hard, they should make sure that all their laptops are compatible with them. The 12" powerbook and ibook, one would think, are prime candidates for hooking up to such a large display. And if that isn't going to happen, at LEAST update the 15" that has the DVI port at the same time as the 12" and the 17".

Not technically right, you just can't hook up to an _Apple_ flat panel. Any flat panel with a VGA connection will work.

Why isn't there a DVI port? I think Apple just ran out of room on the side of the 12" and had a choice: VGA/S-video out, or DVI. For something portable that is probably going to be used for presentations, you go with the latter. The 15" and 17" have this covered, since they've got plenty of room for VGA, S-video, _and_ DVI. It's a compromise, but what are you gonna do?

^ lol...you mean "the former". The 12" does only has the VGA output, not the DVI.

Instead of trying to connect the 12" PB to an ACD Apple Display, why not go for a ForMac display? They sell them in VGA editions and look beautiful.

^ I asked my techie friend about this and apparently it's a matter of size...the ibook and the 12" powerbook are too small to accomodate that extra port.

That's why I think alot of people are kind of frustrated...it's a waste to get a powerful g4 machine and not be able to hook it up to a larger display, especially if it's the intention to get a new one to tie us over until a 970 comes out.

I will pick up a 15" if they ever bother updating it in the next few months.

They'd also need the additional chipset.

Have you seen the insides of these things? They are *so* cramped it's a marvel they work at all.

This issue really bombed me out too. I was ready to order the 12" and the 17" display, and was horryfied to find out that the only solution was 400$ more.
I can understand why the DVI port and chipset won't fit in the small 12" case, but Apple should at least provide a solution.

Anyone seen the Formac displays i RL? I'm considering them, but the design is by far a step down from Apple.
