OK, I know I have done this before somehow, but I can't remember what I did.
What I am trying to do is create an alias (or symlink) to my photos. I am using OSX's built in server/web sharing.
My site root is at ~/Sites/ but I want to link to ~/Pictures/
I know I have done this before. It must be possible somehow. I tried creating a Symbolic Link (using Cocktail, because Im too lazy to look up the terminal command) to the Pictures folder, but that gave me a 403 forbidden.
So I tried setting permissions to 777 (on the Pictures folder and ALL of its contents) to allow everything, but it had no effect what so ever. I still got a 403 forbidden.
I know index listings (or whatever they are called) are turned on, because I have an index listing for ~/sites/
Do you have any suggestions?

try another sym link maker. i do this and i also do it to another hd and it works
use ftp program to ftp to your self rather than using local connecting (ie: turn ftp in sharing. then ip address for host and user login for user and pass) and set the permissions
i use one that adds the sym link maker to my right click menu (to tired to call it by its right name) but i am to lazy to give its name right now.
also make sure in your httpd.conf that you have follow sym links enabled. should be in there down were you set web root folder.

Edit /etc/httpd/users/(yourusername).conf
<Directory "/Users/(yourusername)/Sites/">
Alias / /Users/(yourusername)/Pictures/
Options Indexes MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
