I bought my wife a macbook and every time she starts it up the DVD drive makes a noise like it has a DVD in it but it doesn't. My macbook does not have this issue. HELP!

That's the DVD drive "homing," or relocating the read heads to see if there's a disc in the drive. It's perfectly normal, though somewhat annoying. I take it you have a different version of the MB from your wife's version? Some machines' optical drives are louder than others'.

Check under System Profiler (in Utilities) under Disc Burning to see if you both have the same burner. As soon as you click on Disc Burner, it will make that homing noise.
Also, hopefully she's not starting it up all the time? Just put it to sleep instead...

I checked and the superdrive firmware is up todate.
