On Thursday, photo software developer Macphun updated its black-and-white photo editing software, Tonality, to version 1.2. The new version offers support for Apple's Photos image-management program, as well as adding a Luminosity Mask and enhancing overall performance. The Pro version, which can act as either a standalone app or functions as a plug-in for Photoshop and Lightroom, has new RAW features as well.

The program offers professional-quality presets and a wide range of filters to convert color photos to B&W and bring out different emphasis or recreate classic film looks in the photos, and version 1.2 includes seven new presets and other powerful features such as layered changes, adaptive exposure, overlay textures, grain emulation, smart contrast, brushes for selective adjustments, and now the new Luminosity Mask that allows more selective adjustment of contrast and colors in an image.

The brushes now have support for the Force Touch to allow users to control the stroke diameter on the new 2015 MacBook and MacBook Pro models that feature the new Force Touch trackpad. The Pro version offers support for the latest updates to Photoshop and Lightroom CC, updates the RAW library to support newer formats and cameras, and adds a RAW file transfer from Lightroom to preserve the high-quality results Tonality Pro achieves in Lightroom. MacNN is currently evaluating the new version and will publish a review of the software soon. Having worked with the previous version, we are impressed with the changes, and the power of both the previous and new version to create memorable images across a range of black and white styles quickly and easily, as seen in this example of an image of Harry Potter's Diagon Alley.

As with its other plug-ins, the standalone Tonality program is sold exclusively in the Mac App Store, while Tonality Pro is sold directly from Macphun's website. Existing users of Tonality will receive the update free from the Mac App Store, while current Tonality Pro users can upgrade by invoking the program's "Check for Update" function. New users can buy Tonality for a limited time for $13, $5 off its usual price, while Tonality Pro will debut at an introductory price of $60, a $10 savings from its $70 retail price.

I love their software but I am baffled that their PRO apps do not support os x 10.11 until mid-Oct.
what does a "PRO" do until then?
P.S. you can't invoke "check for update" unless you can actually get the program to run long enough.
