I'm trying to look for an answer to this but am getting mixed results with Google. Some say they can and do boot OS X off a USB hard drive using a G4 and some say it's not possible. I need to figure this one out because when Leopard is released I want to install it on an external drive first to see if all my apps work before I replace 10.4.

AFAIK only intel Macs can boot from USB devices.

That's what I always thought but I'm seeing so many conflicting opinions. For example, one person wrote that a cloner app (Super Duper) created a bootable USB volume for their PPC Mac. Can anyone confirm if there is an application that can do it?

You can clone a (bootable) volume, but still your Mac won't be able to boot off it. However, if you clone from that USB device again (to a firewire drive for instance), it'll work just fine.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Try this: macosxhints.com - Boot PowerPC Macs via USB 2.0 drives

I tried it with my iBook G4 with no luck. You never know though, it might work for you. It just depends if you have that version of firmware that allows it.

on a similar note, if you can even get it to see the usb device in openfirmware, then there should be no issue booting off of it, as you can even run the boot command straight for the device.
something like:

boot device:partition,\path\components\to\boot\file

ex, to boot off your internal hd, you can do

boot hd:,\System\Library\CoreServices\BootX

If you look at that link I posted, it tells how some have booted from USB drives using an iMac G5.

Speaking of macosxhints.com it was on there that I read the article about Super Duper! activated USB boot drives with PPC.

macosxhints.com - Easily boot from USB 2.0 drives on PowerPC Macs

I don't know if that is bull or a fluke.
