i am trying to mount a .img or .iso. both are dvd-rs. i can use alcohol 120% or daemon tools on pc but was wondering if there was an app for osx that could do the same. would renaming the file to .dmg have the same effect?

renaming the file wont do anything, its a different format. YOu can use Roxio Easy CD Creator to mount ISO's on Mac, .img will mount automatically with disk copy or disk utilities.

.iso files mount just fine for me. I don't know if that's new to Tiger or if Panther could do that as well.

I have had disk utilities be able to mount some ISO images, and not be able to mount others...
However, I've never had a problem with Toast mounting them.

double click .iso or .img, the OS will just mount the file. much better than daemon tools, no menu clickin an no file selection dialogs !!
on the rare occasion an image may not mount with double click. In this case i right click the file select 'Open With' select Toast 6.11, then click the 'Mount' button in Toast's main window. Works perfectly.
