The World wide developers conference is coming up in August. What else do you guys expect to see other than a preview of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard? Do you predict any unveilings of new Macbook updates? Or the new Mac Pro? Anything hardware wise? Should I be excited to see a update to the MBP?

You'll notice that I wasn't just talking about speed. I'm talking about hardware (such as video input devices) that simply do not yet work with x86 systems. The drivers haven't yet been released.

And to cater to this market, what I imagine to be a substantial set of the professional market (myself, at times, included), I could easily see Apple releasing new G5 towers, when and if faster G5 processors are available.

Since Woodcrest (Core 2 Duo for workstations and servers) dropped today, I think Apple will have the Mac Pro out well ahead of August. Some OEMs will have Core 2 Duo for sale within a week, and C2D will be in the retail channel in 2 weeks.

WWDC will bring the Leopard preview and an updated Xserve.

Given that Photoshop still isn't available in a Universal Binary and that much 3rd-party hardware won't run on the x86 machines just yet, I could see not only a "Mac Pro," but also an update of the PowerMac G5 line. No matter, however, I do expect an update of the professional desktops.

Pfff. ya right. I think they MIGHT still sell G5s after the towers are out but no upgrades.

The reason being is the new towers will be so damn fast that it will make up the fact that it is emulated.

I'm not saying that the Intel offerings won't potentially blow away the current G5 desktops, but what I am saying is that many professionals have devices that do not have x86 drivers, and they will still account for a large percentage of the Mac professional market for some time. It is with that in mind that I believe that faster G5s could be ushered in without an announcement, suddenly appearing on the Apple Store.

If only devices had like a high capacity flash-card or memory chip on it so the manufacturer can put Mac, Windows, and Linux drivers on it as a -standard-. Or, users can stick in their own drivers that are programmed by themselves downloaded right off the internet or the manufacturer's website. Whenever they plug in the device, the specific driver needed by the OS gets loaded to the hard disk and runs off of that.

I'm not sure why you'd need a 'high capacity' device, as drivers aren't that big. And it's MUCH MUCH easier and cost efficient for hardware companies to offer every version of their drivers on their website, rather than add bulk, cost, and complexity to their products.

They pretty much already took that path with the iMac "From the creators of the iPod".

The towers are not targeted to the mid-consumer market.

1) We'll find out the replacement for the Power Mac. However, the iMac name will not change.
2) We'll see a preview of Leopard. Boot Camp will be included, but no virtualization. It will run on most if not all of the machines that currently support Tiger, but at least one major feature other than Boot Camp will be Intel-only, and no valid technical reason will be given for this.

It won't be. Boot Camp is just there to eliminate customer objections if they have one or two business-critical Windows-only apps which they have to run from time to time. Apple is clearly committed to the Mac platform, and it's in their best interests that people run OS X as much of the time as possible -- it's just that Boot Camp enables more people to buy Macs in the first place.

Indeed. It's announced through the normal ADC channels (ADC News, etc) and on the WWDC site... I believe if you have an ADC Student accounts (necessary to apply) you'll also get a specific mail about it.

Is there any particular pro app you're expecting from Adobe? I can't imagine it's anything from the Creative Suite or Macromedia Studio line besides Acrobat, which tends to be out of sync with the rest of CS. But I wouldn't bet on any Universal apps shipping from Adobe by August.

I also don't think they'll bother using WWDC to showcase an update to the mini. If they're going to showcase hardware at a developer conference, it should be something newer than a bump to an existing line. Displays, I can buy, since they'll go along with towers and won't need much time spent on them.

I am just guessing - that if the new apple intel towers are out, then Adobe may ride the wave along with their release and push 1 app or the suite out in universal at the same time, would be a nice time to demo them on a new tower, new display and hungry audience
