this is my 1st labtop and it gets really hot... it feels like a hot pack... but nothing that will burn you. All my friends say that this is normal, so i am not worried

Try the iStat Pro dashboard widget for temperature monitoring. Excellent for monitoring everything, actually.

CoreDuo Temp works well, too.

Other recommended apps (not the ultimate list, but a good place to start)

- Slim Battery Monitor
- Coconut Wifi
- MacTheRipper
- Handbrake
- Growl
- Hardware Growler
- Onyx
- Quicksilver
- Safari Speed
- School House
- Stuffit Expander (because some things are packaged this way still)
- UNO
- Unplugged

also, i would get VLC as a media player and SuperDuper as a way to completely backup your hard drive. AppZapper is a great uninstaller. and together, they keep your mac as "clutter-free" as possible.

as for the orig poster:

Photoshop/Office/Final Cut etc. whatever big programs you use daily.
Azureus - if you are into the torrent thing
Unison / Split & Concat / MacPar Deluxe - if you are into the newsgroup thing
VLC (Video Lan Client) - Best media Player I have found for the mac
Adium - IM client supports multiple networks very tweakable

Widgets:
Weatherbug
istat Pro
Box Office (for movie times)
Fed Ex / UPS tracking - when I buy stuff online

Other than that have fun searching and playing. 1/2 the fun of the "switch" is seeing how much better some things can be in Macland.

Because some people are educated enough to run Windows or Mac OSX without any issues.

I suggest quicksilver (don't know what iRez's quicsilver is?);

But Statoo is also worth giving a look. Its can be more elegant than some dashboard widgets and always in view if you have a large enough external monitor.
