I got a free DeskJet 5550 with my 12" PowerBook in the J&R deal. I plugged it in and immediately got the latest drivers off HP's site. They installed fine and i can go into the configuration and see ink levels and print test (and WOW!) pages and they all work. When i try to print from another program, however, it doesnt print. the job gets queued to the list and if you go into the print center it says "Jobs Stopped." if you try to start the jobs, it briefly says "Opening Printer Connection" and then says Jobs Stopped again, with nothing printed. Is this a known issue? Im running 10.2.4.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Max

update: on the HP site it says to delete the pre installed driver that OSX adds automatically and add one with the driver i installed. I deleted the current printer fine, but when i went to add a new one, the program unexpectedly quits when i chose USB from the list... any ideas?

alright, update #2: problem solved. it turns out, the link HP has on their 5550 page is out of date. the most current version, 2.1, wasnt found until a search of the MacNN news. all is working now.
thanks,
Max

The HP 5550 is an excellent photo printer. This printer is capable of printing at the same resolutions as HP's photosmart printers and they use the same ink cartridges.

But what does the 7150 have over the 5550 that makes it a "Photoprinter"?
I read that besides photoprinting, the 7150 is pretty much normal for everything else, but the 5550 is an allrounded good printer.
Just wanna know just how good the 7150 is for photoprinting.
I'll be printing mainly photos since i'm into photography

The differences between the Deskjet 5550 and the Photosmart 7150 are as follows:
The 5550 comes with cartridges 57 and 56, I/O ports USB and Parallel, and a tray that does not include a built in 4 X 6 tray. To print photo's on this printer you will need to buy cartridge 58......about $25.
The 7150 comes with cartridges 57 and 58, two USB ports, and a tray that does include a built in 4 X 6 tray. To print text and graphics you will need to buy cartridge 56.......about $20.
Both printers are capable of printing about 4800 X 1200 DPI. The 5550 is faster but the 7150 is set up to print photo's right out of the box. Both printers are capable of printing border-less 4 X 6 photo's but the 7150 already has 4 X 6 tray. On the 5550 you will need to remove the paper and make the tray smaller. Its easy to do but its not very convenient.

ah ok
But the 5550 is the better all around printer rite?
Have u compared the photo prints between the two before?
Are there any HP printers that allow borderless A4 prints?
because all the printers i see don't do that
hmm

The Deskjet 5550 prints are of the same quality as the Photosmart 7150. You will see no difference in the photo prints as long as you are using cartridges 57 and 58. Only 4 X 6 prints are borderless.
