I am actually watching Harsh Realm for the first time, and I keep seeing many similarities. The end appears relatively similar (end of a world).

What do you think?

The reviews on Amazon suggest that Harsh Realm came after The Matrix and used some of the same ideas.
Or maybe it`s just a coincidence.

The comic came out in 1993... I would guess that the matrix was inked before that... but I could be wrong. The movie came out in 1999, so it could easily have taken 5+ years to get from original idea to the big screen...

Well, here it goes.

According to the producer (see DVD Speacial features), the MAtrix camer through not too long after.

"Harsh Realm" was called "The Poor Man's Matrix".

By the way, some episodes of that show were pretty good. Original and innovative. I don't recommend buying it (although I did and have no regrets) but it is certainly worth watching for whover is a sci-fi fan.

The Matrix was based on the anime Ghost in the Shell.

I think it all started with "King Kong"...

Ort was it "From the Earth To The Moon" by Mlis?

The problem in using Ghost in the Shell to inspire Matrix is that the referals are pretty weak. Harsh Realm as more similarities with with Matrix than Ghost in the Shell...

GoS does not have an alternate reality that interferes with Reality as clearly as HR.

Actually, METROPOLIS started it all. You'll see Matrix themes/ideas in a number of films that followed, including: Tron, 1984 MacIntosh Commercial, Harsh Realm, Dark City, Johnny Nmemonic, Virtuosity, etc,. The 'W'bros combined ideas from these and other films to put a fresh spin on the Matrix.
