Spotlight used to be able to search all of my music instantly by tags. worked great. at some point, though, it just stopped. Now my searches don't return any music results at all. The music folder didn't get added to the spotlight privacy list or anything like that. any way i can manually re-index the music folder? (I don't really want to re-index the entire drive, just that folder)

Just let it re-index overnight. No biggie.
