It's been a little more than a year now since the "act of liberation" started. I have put the expression because not everybody agrees on it to some extent. But my point is the following. Rumsfeld announced on March 21, 2003 that the attack on Iraq was about following the 8 objectives ( http://www.iwar.org.uk/news-archive/2003/03-21-5.htm).
1) Rumsfeld said the first is to end the regime of Saddam Hussein "by striking with force on a scope and scale that makes clear to Iraqis that he and his regime are finished."
2) The coalition will identify, isolate and eliminate Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
3) It will also eliminate Iraq's missiles and other delivery systems, the production capabilities and distribution networks, he said.
4) Coalition military forces will search for, capture or drive out terrorists who have found refuge in Saddam Hussein's Iraq.
5) The coalition will also collect intelligence related to terrorist networks in Iraq and beyond and will collect intelligence on the global network of illicit weapons of mass destruction activity.
6) It will end sanctions and immediately deliver humanitarian relief to the displaced and the many needy Iraqi citizens.
7) The coalition will secure oil fields and resources, "which belong to the Iraqi people and which they will need to develop their country after decades of neglect," Rumsfeld said.
8) Finally, the coalition will create the conditions for Iraq's rapid transition to a representative government "that is not a threat to its neighbors." The coalition is committed to ensuring the territorial integrity of Iraq.
(Note: these are quoted as is except for the # ID I gave them.)
What do yout think is the actual status of these objectives?

1) success
2) failure to either identify or isolate said weapons, because they were already destroyed.
3) end result accomplished by #1.
4) not sure.
5) unclear
6) unclear
7) Oil fields secured. Ownership is unclear.
8) unclear
So, we have #1 and #7 accomplished. Those were the real goals in the first place.

Quick update.
Any comments regarding the objectives stated by Rumsfeld, especially with the perspective of the actual situation?

the oil fields may be secured but the pipelines get bombed every now and then effectively shutting down production for a couple of days.
other than that, it looks like lerkfish has it right. even if that was over a year ago.

2) failure to either identify or isolate said weapons, because they were already destroyed, or moved to Syria or Iran, or hidden by old Iraqi Military leaders still loyal to Saddam for use on coalition troops.

As a reminder, these objectives are as stated by Rumsfeld.
#2 is done, but has been a failure from day one.
#5 is ongoing, but the goal was to find them in Iraq; keep up with the thread the course Spliffdaddy.
#7 and #8 are interesting. #7 may be done, but #8 does not appear to have had any improvements.

To be fair, there's still more civility in Iraq than we saw during the months of rioting in France.
