For purely academic reasons I decided to test my connection speed with several of these online tests. I happen to know that my maximum down speed is 375kB/s and my maximum up speed is 100kB/s, so I really wasn't expecting any shocks. What I hadn't realised is how woefully inadequate these servers are. Not a single one reported more than half of my line speed. I even went so far as to upload and download files from a known fast server just to make sure I was actually transferring data at full speed. Thanks to the application Net Monitor at least I can track my local data traffic.

What I don't understand is why these so called report sites don't garner more ridicule. I had no idea of how bad they are and have never heard complaints from anyone else. I tried, what I felt was, a broad cross-section of these sites. What has been your experience? Is there a reliable way to test connection speeds?

Cheers!

That was actually the first site I tried. I suppose network traffic just makes it impossible to gauge connections. But, I still wonder why they bother.

Maybe the reports you got were correct, and you are not getting what you're paying for ?

I usually like www.toast.net/performance -- I only use the free tests. It actually isn't working properly right now, but I usually get (what I believe to be) fairly accurate results.

I was surprised at the low rating that Earthlink received. My experience has been good. I've had the service for about 4 years, only a down time of a matter of hours twice.

I'm not really sure how to read my results from toast.net.
