eMac + leopard ?

I just ordered a refurb eMac (1ghz G4 , 512mb , 40gb , combo drive , airport) and I was wondering if any of you have experience running leopard on a system like this, it runs great on my PB but that is a 1.67 with 2gb of ram etc.
The reason i bought the computer is for my grandmother who is 87 and just wants to exchange emails with the rest of the family and possibly read the news once in a while, i'm not even entirely sure she will have the patience to use it so i didn't want to go to too nuts lol.

Upgrade the memory as much as possible, and then I'd say it will run decent enough for a grandmother with little patience.

Why are you thinking Leopard - wouldn't 10.4.11 be a sufficient choice for your grandmother? What are the advantages you think she'll get out of Leopard?
The real advantage to Leopard for this scenario might be the iChat screen sharing.

Leopard will not run decently with less than 1gb of memory because the CPU is a slower clock speed than the last revision of eMacs (1ghz is on the pc100 clock).
Tiger would run great on that machine, but with a clean install and upgraded memory, Leopard should run sufficiently. *If* you are going Leopard because of the iChat screen sharing, consider checking out something like LogMeIn for that purpose.

thanks for the responses guys
i was hoping to use screen sharing but it was also sort of convenient because I have an unused copy of leopard sitting on my desk. would the eMac come with 10.4 or 10.3? I wasn't sure and the store i bought it from had only listed that they "reinstall all factory software including original OS"

Get more RAM and it should be fine.

The original OS for a 1.0ghz eMac is either 10.2 or 10.3, depending on the model number. The 1.0ghz eMac never came with 10.4 originally.
