Is there away to have a screen come up just before or during shutdown, just like the startup screen. I want it to say something like "SHUTDOWN IN PROGRESS" ect.

I don't know about pictures, but I've found a few extensions that will create visual effects on shutdown. One is called ShutdownSlide (forgot where I downloaded it), which causes the desktop to "slide" off the screen. And there are a few more that I found at http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html -- just do a search on "shutdown."

Or you could try putting items in the "Shutdown items" folder inside your System folder.
