ok really simple might be kinda relative... I use OS X 95% of the time... but on my Tibook 550 photoshop redraw is so bad that I have to reboot in OS 9 to do anything productive...

well I have the need to constantly send out and recive files while i'm working...

I would like to use a simple email porgram that will let me store a limited addres book (would be great if I could export it from enturage)

I want it to be small to limit the amount of disk space I'm using...

so to recape:

an simple Email program (but more than telenet and less than Outlook)

ideas?

How much memory do you have installed. Perhaps it's that. OSX just *eats* memory.

the simplest email client is already installed on your system - it's called 'mail'.

At a terminal prompt, mail will check your local mailbox for any messages and let you read/delete/reply to them. It's fairly crude from a GUI perspective, but it works. Since mail only checks your local mailbox, you'll need some way of getting your mail from your ISP/other mail accounts, for which most people would use Fetchmail (already installed on your system, too). man mail and man fetchmail should get you started.

A richer mail client is Mutt which will handle POP3 and IMAP mailboxes as well as local mail. This is probably the best all-round non-gui mail client.

The advantage of these mail clients is that they open instantly, and consume zero CPU resources when they're not actively processing mail. This means you can either open them once and leave them in the background or open them (quickly) any time you want to get/send mail.

If you truly want a GUI mail client, Bare Bones' MailSmith is probably the most compact one I've come across. In some ways the interface is quirky, but it does the job well enough.

I do see your point, though.

However, I still stand by MailSmith as an option. It's carbon and the same application will run under Mac OS 9.x and OS X. I haven't tried it but I would assume it's possible to use the same mail file in both environments, so your look, feel, and access to mailboxes/folders remains constant.
