Name that cable! Actually, I'll tell you what it is. It's a 25' extension cable for a Clarion marine radio. The face and the main "cpu" of this radio are separate pieces. And this is the extension cable you need if you need the parts to be more than 10 feet apart. I do need them to be more than 10 feet apart. But only like 13 feet apart. My boat's not that big, and I'd rathe not have a 20' coil of cable hanging around my boat.

So the real point of this thread is to ask, is this cable standard at all? It's Clarion name is MWRXCRET but if the connector has a standard name, maybe I could get a 3' version from Monoprice for like 1/10th the price, and not have to deal with shit loads of slack.

As you can see, it's about a 1/2" connector. Any ideas?

To be honest, and I always am, I usually buy excess cable lengths then I actually need. You just never know.

But in this case, you do know. My boat's not going to suddenly grow longer. And both piece of the radio are going to be very permanently installed. This is a case where exact length or close to it, would be the ideal way to go.

So, no plans on upgrading your boat?

I you mean replacing it? Maybe someday, but if I spend $50,000 on a new boat, I'll just buy a whole new $25 cable and not worry about having extra slack now.

It's definitely 8 pin DIN. At half inch it's the full size variety, not the popular mini-DIN.

Given how not-unreasonably priced the 25' Clarion cable is, I'd go with that. The results on google for "8 pin din cable" are all mini-DIN or the 25' Clarion cable.

Just hope that the pinout is normal and not changed.

The pinout looks standard, but such cables are non existent. I was hoping I could find a page on monoprice that had these cables at 15 different lengths, in no less than 3 different colors. Oh well, I guess I'm stuck with the 25' cable.

monoprice has 6', 10', and 25' MDIN8 cables... but they're MDIN8 (so you'd need DIN8-MDIN8 adapters, one M-F and one M-M) and M-M so you'd need an F-F adapter to chain them to 13'.

Well, all things considered (including my lack of soldering skills, and my need for a 13' cable anyway), I'll just buy the 25 footer. Whats a little more weight, its only a boat. Oh wait . . .

fine hahaha

and if that cable adds weight to the point where you are reaching some threshold on your boat, then you have other problems then the cable.

i understand that. but the difference between 13' and 25' of that cable is what, 13oz?

so if 13oz puts you over, then yes...you have problems other then the cable you need to worry about.

carry one less beer in your cooler if you must

Radio Shack used to sell these. I don't know if they still do.
