In OS X 1.5 I had changed the icon of the Utilities folder to a custom icon using the Get Info copy/paste method. Jag won't allow me to change that icon anymore. I can change others but not Utilities. Anyone know why?

I'd sure like to change the icon for the finder in the Dock too, but I can't figure out how yet... I hate that stinking blue rectangle. How do I do that?

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

I've been asking this question for a few weeks every now and then with no luck and answer....nobody at MacOSXHints.com knows either and they are darn good over there. Soooo, it's a bug by Apple is all that can be determined.

Probably the permissions on the folder got changed somehow. Do a Get Info on the folder, click the little padlock icon, and change the group to "admin." Then you should be able to change the icon if you are logged in as an admin user.

This problem with the Utilities folder is the very first problem I noticed when I installed Jaguar for the very first time today. I could cry. I love making a little shortcut in my finder toolbar with a cutom icon for that folder, and now it won't let me do it.
PS. I loved copying and pasting icons in the same get info window... how do you turn it off so that you don't have to keep spawning new get infor windows?

Get info -> separate window
option-key get info -> same window

Cool and VERY freaky!!! If you use regular get info it uses a cocoa 'get info' window and if you use option get info it uses a carbon 'get info' window. They both seem the same but use different 'themes'. You can really tell if you have metalizer installed.

Nice trick, but here's another one for you: What do you do if you want to open a separate info window for each item in a highligted group?

Add my name to the list of people having this problem. I can't even change the icons for the "special" folders in my home directory (Movies, Pictures, etc). I've tried mucking with the permissions and still had no luck.
Weird thing is, if I turn on File Sharing and connect from another machine (running 10.1.5), the custom icons show up.

To change the Utilities folder is quite easy.
Create a New folder >
Call it 'anything' >
Change icon to 'whatever' >
Drag contents of current Utilities Folder to the new one
Delete the original Utilities folder (now empty)
Rename 'anything' folder to Utilities
Done
not CLI sexy, but it works

Did you not try this yourself? That does work UNTIL you restart where the Utilities folder icon will default back to the plain folder icon. Nice try.

You can't paste over any of the "special" folders. The only way to change them is ugly, by hacking the SystemIcons.rsrc (/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemIcons.bundle/Contents/Resources/SystemIcons.rsrc) file and then rebooting. I used Iconographer (check versiontracker), nice and easy (but not as easy as copy and paste in the Finder). Logging out won't update the icons. Such a hassle, I dislike rebooting.
Also to change the Finder icon in the Dock, try changing the /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/finder.png file. I haven't tried it myself (the little blue "rectangle" doesn't bother me that much) but but it's worth a shot. Hopefully you won't have to reboot to change that one.

The icon pasting issue is only temporary and it will be resolved VERY soon and in a VERY cool way -- and not with an update to OS X...
But, of course, that's all I can say for now. =)

Not to start any rumors or anything; however, I sure hope what Maury (RailHead) is eluding to is some sort of "system-wide" icon changing thing much like what iChat has built into it when changing your icon there. Scalable, select sections, 128 x 128 quality....wow, if that was the way all icons would change, I'd die. Please let that be it, and if it's not...MAKE IT!

For a completely uneducated guess on what Maury might be alluding to, check out Freeverse's upcoming app, Xpression!
I don't know if this app will be the answer everyone is looking for, but it sure sounds cool. Can't wait until a download is available!

Yeah that looks like a very cool app, but I think he is talking about the new project from Iconfactory, I know he was a beta tester for the iconbuilder pro plugin. I don't know what it is but it can't be bad if it's coming from them.

Than it must be the "super secret project" the Iconfactory is working on
Although they hint it's something for the Dock

Very sweet indeed. Especially the QT movie demo. But I don't have a problem w/ toolbar icons. I think they are fine. I just want to change an application or folder icon once in a while.
I am having particular difficulty with Watson's icon. Can't get my replacement to stick, and I can't figure out why.
Thought would be appreciated.

you try other modifier keys, of course!
you think it's funky that you already have two different kinds of finder get info windows? try command-shift-i. bet you never expected to see that window again, eh? this key combo will open a fidderent window for each selected file. weirdest thing about it? when a single file is selected, it will NOT show the info window if the selected file is a folder [and aliases to folders count as folders in this respect]. when multiple files are selected, it will show info windows for folders--even if every selected file is a folder.
another oddity about these info windows is that though they have the substantial title bars of full-fledges windows [they aren't floaters like the command-option-i], they do not appear in the "Window" menu the way the 'normal' command-i info windows do.

make an alias of your utilities folder, give it a custom icon, put it in your finder toolbar, and wipe away your tears. no hacking necessary

Don't like that for a variety of reasons, especially for the little "arrow" that an alias icon creates, it will still stay there if you add a custom icon or not.

command-shift-i connects to iDisk. I even tried it with the Get Info button in the Finder toolbar. The latter will open up a combine get info window, but slowly like the slow minimize/maximize dock window.

So, you guys have seen CandyBar, right?
I don't like a lot of third-party apps confusing my system, but Panic makes pretty good stuff, and I like how they are stressing that this is a 'safe' way to change default icons.

I'm also noticing the problem with a few apps icons. Office ones to start with, which are the first ones I NEED to change. I just don't associate stylized and barely readable letters with productivity apps.

this is true. apparently these other odd info windows belong to something else (not the finder). presumably a service? but i see no service in my menu that use command-shift-i. here's a screen shot of them. do these look familiar to anyone?
Edit: bah! n/m. it's Magic Menu. it has a "get more info..." command.

Has anyone found a working and fairly easy way to change the Finder icon? It's the only icon I have not figured out how to change.
