Not even a question in these forums. Everyone here will tell you the dual.

I'd probably go with the dual. It has more RAM (you'll want more than 256, guaranteed). In some cases it'll be a bit slower, but in most it will be faster (concurrency is just better).

Yeah I have had the dual 867 for 6 months and its a great machine. I was thinking of selling it and buying a new 970 powermac, but Im happy with what I got. There'll always be something new and faster anyways.

I am currently using a greatful 12 inch PowerBook but I am thinking of selling it and getting either the dual 867 or 1GHz. So if I go for the dual 867, what I will miss is the support of Airport Extreme only... while other configuration would be the same or get even better, right?

Same here, I'd recommend the Dual. In most cases it'll be a lot faster than the Single 1 GHz PowerMac. However the latter is quieter and well, it's a new PowerMac not a used one.

Another thing to consider is if you need the ability (for some reason) to boot into OS 9. The dual 867 will, 1Ghz won't, officially at least.
I have a dual 867 too and I'd recommend that one just for the raw power.

If you're looking for performance, the dual should do; but if you're going to spend that much...wait a few weeks until the announce the 970, maybe there's a deal to be had. Personally I'm waiting for a 970 powerbook announcement before I get a new mac.

I would also recommend the dual. The stability of Mac OS X allows for awesome multitasking. You won't regret getting the dual for that very reason.
Just get a high resolution screen (at least 1280x1024 native) and multitask away without any slowdowns. You'll appreciate your dual.

Dual unless you can wait for the 970...
The SP 1 is a bad system, the midrange dual 1.25 or the old dual 867 is much better. The dual is not faster really but has more "torque" so when you load it with many things at the same time it holds up its responsiveness better. With say a 90 % efficency in SMP the dual 867 correspond to a SP at 1.5 GHz and in non SMP it should be only marginally slower than a 1 GHz

i feel sorry for the single 1ghz powermac, i have yet to see some person actually approve of it. i know the dual is faster, blah blah blah. but at times, does one really need that much power?
i don't know. i just find it be odd how out of all the current macs, only the 1ghz powermac, and the emac get ragged on. it seems as if everyone hates them. i'll shutup now.

dual, unless you're into tasks that don't thread well (ie gaming, some other specific apps). For the most part, dual processors don't make that much of a difference if the app doesn't thread well (unless, of course, you're using other apps at the same time )

I'd go for the 867. I've had mine for 7 months now and still enjoy it. There's always going to be something out there thats a big faster, etc. but the 867 was at the right price and is just enough for me.
