That's not really that great of a deal buddy. The new C2D model has twice the cache, a DL Superdrive, a larger HDD and Firewire 800 and a higher clocked GPU for $1999 U.S. This is without any special discounts.

As much as I play games the 256MB video card isn't enough to satisfy the deal. Times have moved on so don't look at this as $600 off but rather $100 less.

oh ok, so the 256mb video card isn't much better than the 128mb video card in the new c2d models?

It might even be worse. As others have noted, one of the big draws of the new C2D MBP's is that they seem to have improved the rear venting, allowing for cooler operation overall. And among other things, Apple has been able to set the clockspeeds of the X1600 in the new MBP's to be much closer to spec, whereas the original MBP's X1600 was dramatically underclocked.

I personally think this is reason enough to buy one of the new models over a refurb or discounted earlier model.

My refurbed MBP is perfect. No dead pixels, no scratches, no problems whatsoever. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a refurbed again.

When you buy a refurb from Apple and you see scratches and other cosmetics damages, does Apple repair them? Or, is a refurb sale handled "as is?"

Has the exact same 1-year warranty as a NEW Apple computer. So no, they are not sold "as is".

so, theoretically, when you purchase a refurb, it couldve been given back to apple multiple times then right?

I'm not sure this would be possible; as I understand it, Apple doesn't accept returns of refurbs, so I don't think a refurb could get returned and put back into circulation again.

Then again, I have heard of people returning refurbs, so who knows.

Possibly. I believe you can return a refurbished Mac just like one bought new. Then again, a refurbed could have been purchased new and the buyer had "buyers remorse" and returned it a day later. You never know. The majority of refurbs are likely buyers remorse returns, not "problem" computers.

My current MBP is a refurbed and I couldn't be happer. When I upgrade my G5 iMac to a Core 2 Duo iMac I'm thinking of going refurbished again. You just cannot beat those prices...

Refurbs are great if one does not need the very latest models, which are almost never available as refurbished. Also when displays are involved you don't want to buy a model too old.

The new C2D MBPs are stronger in many ways (e.g. 3 GB available RAM), enough that graphics/music/games folks should not buy Rev A at this point. However for folks whose usage is Office, surfing, etc. the refurbs make great sense.
