ok, i just dL'd the new itunes 10. had to re-do view options on ALL my playlists....apple decided for me what i want to see. also...a lot of my album covers are NOT showing up. and LARGE view (which i just found) is pretty small. the whole reason i have album covers is to see them LARGE.

ugh.
will continue exploring, hopefully the good stuff will rear it's head...

You can turn on all album covers under View->Always Show Artwork.

My initial gripes:
- It's still Carbon, not Cocoa
- Thanks to the above, it's still 32-bit
- The new close/minimize/resize controls are smaller than the standard OS X ones
- The icons on the left are so low contrast that they're virtually indiscernible from one another

But on the bright side, it feels extremely Snappy™ compared to v9, which always came off as sluggish to me. Also, holding option and pressing the resize button finally fits it properly to the screen, instead of hiding the window under the dock.

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

more junk:

STILL no global view options. artwork NOT showing by default.
some of my playlist view options did NOT stick.
artwork seems to not cache very well...my group covers reload when i return to view them...

seriously (and my last post for tonite, promise):

why can't we have global editing of view options? ie which view, show artwork, which columns we want..? (or am i missing something).

just went thru 100 playlists, turning on "show artwork" when needed, and changing the view on each playlist, and setting only the columns i wanted showing.

ugh.

well, the new icon for itunes is nice enough...

It's faster. The icon is nice enough.

But holy macaroni is the new interface ugly. It's as if Apple raided some non-existant Software Thrift Store for bits of old Linux/Java apps.

WTF, Apple. Really?

For the sake of saving everybody the trouble of finding out the hard way what iTunes 10 looks like, I took the liberty of uploading a screenshot.

Really? Huh, I guess I downloaded the wrong version or something. Mine looks even worse:

Where can I downloaded your nicer-looking version?

Seriously? THAT bad? Come on Apple!

[edit] and what's the number beside the name? it seems to correspond to the track number, but I can add a column that displays the track number, so I see the number twice...???

I like it.

It's a lot snappier for me than it used to be. So far (55,000+ tracks on a networked volume).

I dig the new layout options, and I like the non-garish icons at left.

The window controls, though, are a mind-boggling WTF.

Seriously!!! I prefer the new low contrast icons. The previous version was a bit too windows in its approach to icon design. Still being Carbon is just sloppy, surely Apple have the resource to build one of their premier apps the proper way. The traffic light buttons are just mind meltingly daft though. Way to discard 10 years of interface design and history on a whim.

Anyone NOT been recommended to follow Lady Gaga on Ping? I'm sure my profile music choices should have resulted in her not being recommended. Is Ping just a new playground for record company pluggers?

I wasn't recommended to follow Lady Gaga.

I don't mind the interface changes. Removing the title bar is an interesting choice, but it kinda makes sense since it just used a ton of space merely to say "iTunes." Changing the window controls doesn't bug me either.

Frankly, I'm still much more bothered by the fact that OS X still uses blue gel scroll bars while iLife apps get the newer flat blue scroll bars.

I preferred the more colourful sidebar icons, but I can deal. They also sucked all the colour out the icons in the Preferences window for some reason.

They also removed the older looking tabs in the Devices configuration screen.

I find iTunes 10 a lot faster, it doesn't need a few seconds every once in a while to skip to the next song and I like the new icons. I don't like the reordering of the traffic light buttons, but for the most part, I like the design.

Close iTunes and enter in Terminal:

and to revert to the vertical traffic light:

am i missing something? i used to show a really large cd cover in each playlist, but am now confined to apples' preset sizes? (where large is postage-stamp sized...)? maybe the covers are SUPPOSED to be sized like the new nano.

but i have artwork i want to SEE.

What’s up with the “iTunes of the Living Dead”? Why the flat, greyed out, life-less look? Who were the idiots they tried the beta of this out on? And “Ping” facebook link gone, email and invite your friends… NOT. This is a fail for now. Wait for the next fix!!! Apple give us our color back. +1. I like it too, and it's crazy fast for me. Although I still use the old list view. Is it just me or is sound quality a bit improved?

Considering that everyone was complaining - loudly - about how garish iTunes 9 looked, I'd say they were listening.

i've spent a long time (insert audible "sigh" here) putting artwork to EVERYTHING; i WANT to see the covers, just resent that they are now predefined sizes, and i can't get them LARGE (not apple's tiny definition of 'large")....

I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you said that you could live without artwork displayed, but hated that you had no choice but to see them now!

Also, for the record, I neither care for, nor particularly about, the new icon.

I do wonder at the fact that they've thrown overboard ten years of branding, though.

Honestly, not having direct A/B, I've not been able to verify this, but I know that a couple guys over on the prosoundweb forums were discussing that iTunes 9 sounded subtly different than 8.

Switching back and forth right now between the Finder's QuickLook and iTunes 10, I could swear I can tell a difference between those two, at least.

The problem isn't you doing figures of speech. The problem is that your arrogance makes you think your opinion is the world's opinion. I'm sorry to tell you that you are wrong in this case:

Apple Human Interface Guidelines: Icons

Variations in shape, color, and image all help to differentiate one toolbar icon from another. At the same time, however, an application's toolbar icons should harmonize together as much as possible in their perspective, use of color, size, and visual weight.
Yes, the HIG ask for the icons to harmonize, but colour is still an important factor to distinguish them. Why they got rid off all colour in the sidebar and preferences toolbar is incomprehensible.

Thank you for the lecture.

Now, you might notice that I was talking about people complaining about the look of the icons being too garish in iTunes 9.

You can tell me that it was better that way, and that's all fine, but so was implementing proper resizing when you hit the green button, and people *really* complained about that, too.

Apple listened to the complaints and broke that again, too.

Was there a point you were making, or were you just being obsessively pedantic on the hyperbolic "everyone" in my post, seeing as you, personally, did not complain and feel vindicated by compliance of your e-pinion with the Apple HIG?

BTW, I was one of those who found the old icons too garish, but they did make the source items easier to discern.

I honestly don't really care, though. The vertical lights are a much bigger issue IMO.

And since 10 has got *worlds* faster than 9 was (and 9 was slightly less molasses than 8 was), and I can turn off the traffic light madness, and I never use the iTunes mini player…whatever.

Definitely not. I can't stand the new icon. It looks like it fits better in Vista than on the Mac. Here's to hoping they revise it for version 11.

Oh thank god. This was one of the biggest things holding me back from upgrading. I assume by moving the buttons to the horizontal position the title bar returns, too?

Is there any way to go back to the old list view with album artwork? The new list view with artwork doesn't show artwork unless there's several songs in the album. It makes it difficult to find the few single tracks I have amidst the full albums, even though those individual tracks have artwork.

Alright, obvious question that is rendered valid by Apple's ability for the inexplicable:

Can the Album by Artist column be moved back to its previous position on older version (to the direct right of Artist, I believe)?

Something I just found - iTunes 101: Using the Album Art widget

Double click on the album art image, and the album cover pops out as a separate window as it did before. Hover the mouse over this and you get player controls over the image.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I don't like the new look.

It always looks as if the iTunes windows were in the background.

For what it's worth, I like the new icon. And it would be a new iTunes release without Apple randomly ignoring their HIG.

What is it with iTunes and Mail both ALWAYS ignoring the HIG? Seriously third party apps like Flux and Pixelmator adhere to them much better than Apple does! Hell ADOBE does a better job of making an OS X app than Apple does... did I just say that?

I've also switched back to the old icon... though i found it didn't want to just let me copy and paste, I had to change the actual file within the package.
