Hey,

I read Independence Day 2 will be out soon enough. First reports are coming in, just have to read the web, browse along, google etc. It's going to be great, I believe! What's it all about? Years after the original...? A new angle? Any news?

The ID 4.2 thread is here.

It can work, but I worry about Emerich, etc. Their 2012 and Day After Tomorrow were nothing but visual disaster films and while they haven't quite hit M. Night-type lows, I wonder if they hurt their reputation.

I was a fan of the original. I think the ending could have been written better because all people remember was the silliness of a Powerbook saving the world, and not getting into the tech of it. A line or two could have made that ending feel better.

Hey,

I think it's a sequel... Building the world after havoc happened. Unlike other sequels. It's a bit of a surprise at first glance, definitely worthwhile, though. I still find Roland Emerich to be great, it's just the world's end in various fashions, right (alien invasion, white house down, end of all times, glaciers freezing through etc.). White House Down was great in its own way! I think it could be cool. They'll think a lot about what they are going to do... ID 4 was too much of a sensation, even actors were brillant. Could even use the same actors 10 or 15 years laters, who knows - most of them should still be alive (hmm). Will take a year or so until done.

Any thoughts?

Well, the teens will probably like it.

Just like us 90s kids loved Independence Day, when it fact it is a brutally terrible movie directed by a thoroughly mediocre director. Go ahead, watch it again. Yikes it's bad, but I thought it was awesome at the time. Remember, in 15 years all the kids that just helped Transformers 4 make umpteen hundred million dollars will re-watch it and go "wtf"?

So yeah. You're rooting for the Transformers 4 of the 90s. Good on ya.

interesting - the first one was entertaining, more or less- good for a lazy day. I'd watch the new one for kicks.

I visited the Little A'Le'Inn in Nevada because of the film (they have a plaque there from the producers of ID4, had a whole dedication and everything) Worth stopping if you're in the middle of the desert and need a cold one.

It'll be one of those "I'll grab the torrent" films, but defo not worth the cinema admission.

I used to hate the original. The trailer campaign made it look like an awesome, serious sic-fi epic and what we got was something that couldn't decide between that and daft comedy. Then they hosed it down with a retch inducing dose of cheese.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Hah. Emmerich's Godzilla? Wow, you're masochistic. What did you think of the latest Godzilla?

Roland Emmerich is just...terrible. He makes bad, bad movies man.

Didn't see the new one. I sadly don't see movies very often anymore.

I just loved the **** out of the Emmerich version. Didn't take itself seriously, didn't have a stupid love story, and Godzilla was unquestionably the good gal, while humans were stupid.

I also give them kudos for understanding the boundaries of what CG could do at the time, and making everything dark and rainy to cover for it.

Part of the thing may be I'm not way into Godzilla in general, so I didn't have any fan expectations crushed.

No need for all of the drama in the trailer. Just use an iPad Pro to infect the aliens' computers with another virus. Done.

War of 1996 | Independence Day: Resurgence

Timeline from 1996 to now. If you want to know about Will Smith's Col. Hiller character from the first film, 04.27.2007. But, y'know, spoilers. Maybe.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

And while I'm here singing the good graces of Godzilla instead of taking a huge shit on Independence Day, just the other day I was musing about how cool it was the movie didn't try and skirt around Godzilla not realistically having a chance against F-18s.

I've watched the original movie in 1996 probably 10 times, and the first maybe 8 times I watched it, I thought the movie was BORING. Only two not-boring scenes in the movie, the end of July 2, and the end of July 4, although parts of the ending still did not make sense. The trailer for 2016 looks like yet another high-CGI film where the heroes somehow beat the odds and live on. Here's to a more entertaining (and probably less original, based on the preview) sequel, and maybe this time call it Fireworks Day.
