Looks like a very different kind of technique to my untrained eyes...

The paint seems to have been applied to the top of the case, not from 'inside' like in the link you posted...

Also, could the original picture be a render or mockup?

Nah... I don't think painting anything on the outside of the case would be such a good solution as it would be very sensitive to ripes etc.
