...And Apple's fixing it so question from those who have had the problem before and had the Apple Store do the repair.

They have let me keep it until the part comes in and I assume the swap will occur in store. I seem to remember reading here or elsewhere at some point that people have had issues if they've had 3rd party ram in the system (mine's been upgraded to 4gigs) and Apple not keeping it in or whatever.

Ha anyone had this problem recently on a non-mail-in? I'll definitely ask before turning it over and I guess in store is a little less risky, but I just wanted to check.

Also, anybody have any issues w. machines with self upgraded hard drives? Do they get pissy?

Thanks!

They won't care. It's the mail-in depots that are normally all anal about it. If you want to be sure, just ask to talk to a genius before you leave it.

RAM and HDs are considered user-accessible upgrades. However, if you have the originals, I'd drop those in so you can have some extra stuff.

I'm not sure the HDD is considered a user replaceable upgrade in the older MBPs.
Removing the top case and prying the ribbon cable off of the top of the old HDD is pretty involved.

My 8600 is still going!

They are definitely not user serviceable. You will regret saying that, lol.

Really? I just took in a 2.4 GHz SR into the Apple Store a couple of weeks ago and it was swapped out... I told them I had upgraded the hard drive and they told me to go swap it out for the original drive so that I could keep the upgraded drive.

Were they replacing the entire MBP? Why did you have to change it back, so you could keep your upgrade?

They were swapping it out for a brand new unibody. The poor machine had its logic board replaced 8 times and gone through 2 LCDs. They never had a problem with it at any time.

Hmm, good to know.
The Apple store here was terrible last time I tried it. One of these days I'll get round to taking my MBP in for a top case replacement.

I can't believe Apple let this one be fixed so many times before actually swapping it out. This thing spent over 3 months of the last 2 years in Texas at their repair facility...

Yeah, if they are swapping the whole machine that would make sense about them wanting you to keep your stuff.

Also, 8 times is really bad -- I thought the magic number was 3 before they declared it a lemon -- that just sucks.

Got it fixed yesterday -- done in store while I waited. 2 hours later and I was free to go w. no problem at all with my ram and hard drive -- quite pleased with that kind of service!

Had my board go out about a year ago. Freaked me out.

It about 4 days for it to be sent off and returned. Good times.

I kind of wish that something out go bad on my computers soon. Need that magic number 3.... get a new computer for free! (Happened to a friend.)

Apple fixed mine for a $300 flat-rate fee, they replaced the logic board, top case, keyboard, and battery.

I have to say, that's not a bad price for all of those items.
Dropped mine in this morning for top case replacement.
