Hi all,
Is there a way to just prevent iTunes 4.6 music sharing on a LAN while still allowing access to the iTunes Music Store? As more of our users start getting iPods and more songs in their lists, they are starting to share a lot more, which lowers our internal bandwidth.
I'd like to keep access for them to the store, as I don't see a problem with that. I would, however, like to prevent music sharing. I've sent out nice e-mails describing the problem, but no one seems to listen.
Our PC users use the Cisco Security Agent, which can be programmed to stop iTunes music sharing on a LAN.
Also, I've noticed that turning on the SOCKS proxy stops prevents *both* store access and LAN sharing.
Thanks for any help.

Can't you just block traffic on port 3689? Or does that block the store too? Being in the UK I don't know much about the store.....yet.

Where did you get iTunes 4.6? I don't think it is officially released yet.

Well, first of all, iTunes 4.6 is not out, so let's not jump the gun.
As for iTunes 4.5, how about turning Music Sharing off in the preferences ! What does that have to do with the Store ?
Or am I missing something here ?

Edited: crap, nevermind (what was I thinking?). A firewall change won't help for LAN traffic...

I would take a long hard look at your network before doing anything. How large is your subnet? Is there a possibility that you could break up the subnet? Considering it takes a minimum of 10 users sharing songs simultaneously to saturate a 10 MB/s connection, I really wonder how this could be an issue.

Just turn the firewall on your Macs and not enable the music sharing port.

But he wants them to be able to access the music store.

If you edit the ipfw configuration via the terminal, you can specifically allow access to a port to/from certain IP addresses or subnets.

You can still access the Music Store with the firewall turned on. OS X's firewall does not block the Music Store, just music sharing unless you open that port.

From what I understand, he looks for a solution that is independent from the client.
Something that would effect the whole network, as compared to single computers.
Something, that is mass-deployable...

As is clearly displayed in several locations, iTunes threads belong in the Software forum.
That said, this is just as much a networking question than an iTunes one. So you could equally well post it in Networking.
