I was at my local 2nd hand computer seller and spotted a very interesting Apple IIgs.
It was a normal Apple IIgs box except that on the right side of the front it had "Woz Limited Edition" scripted on it.
Has anyone heard of one of these things?
I'm going to go back and buy it on Monday. I'm incredibly curious!

Yep. They do exist. My school has a couple of them left over in storage.
I think it was an anniversary edition or something.

Yeah, my old elementary school had a few IIgs systems with (I guess) "Woz" scrawled across it. I had no idea what that meant, only being 10 at the time. I thought Apple spelled "whiz" wrong or something.

If i remember the IIgs shipped originally at 1mhz with 256k ram and 128k rom. The Woz Limited Edition came in at 2.8mhz, 1mb ram, and 256k rom. A cool machine way ahead of it's time.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

The Woz limited edition IIgs was a limited run when the IIgs came out. There have been a number of ROM revisions since their original release, and they are still widely available (and well worth the couple of bucks you plunk down on them).
And yeah, these machines rocked. Our family's first computer was a Woz IIgs... something like $2400 for the complete package (5.25 and 3.5, 13" RGB(!) and the ImageWriter II). It's no powerhouse anymore, but they're wildly upgradable... ours now acts as a mail server.
And if nothing else, it's a great piece of nostalgia.

The Woz: Limited Edition was the first run of Apple IIgs's. Don't be fooled though, there were a lot of them made. They aren't very rare to come across.
A fun machine to pick up though.

Anthony,
Please refrain from calling me a 'kid'. I'll admit I'm young, but how many kids do you know that pay their own bills, own two cars, four computers, a business (co-own), is about to graduate from 5 long years of college and has been married for nearly a year to a woman he's known for 5 years?
Back on topic, I do own a Woz II gs (as Anthony has stated) and I've been told that it was designed to compete with the Commodores and Ataris (?) of the day. Other than that I don't know much about it. It just looked interesting and fun so I bought it (although I don't have anything but the CPU so I can't really play with it yet ). If you have the extra $ you might as well get it. It doesn't take up much space and I'm almost positive it would be a cool toy for any Apple fanatic.

Something to be aware of is that the Woz is the most unstable kind of GS. There were 2 ROM revisions - ROM 01 and ROM 03. ROM 03 also added 768kb of RAM to the motherboard - previous models came with only 256kb soldered on.

Before getting my new G4, my computer was a IIGS for 10+ years. Then I saw a screen shot of a modern 3D game...
Woz signed the first 500 production IIGS machines. They were introduced with ROM 00, later upgraded to ROM 01. The upgrade not only shipped on new machines, it was available free to all existing machines. This upgrade offer is no longer valid.
A slightly revised motherboard required a different rom chip, the ROM 03. The rom number "02" was skipped to avoid confusion, this being an Apple II machine.
The only real differences were more memory on the motherboard, revised sound circuitry layout to cut noise, a video pin available on all 7 expansion slots vs 1, and the different rom version.
I have not heard of any stability differences between rom versions 1 & 3. Note that ROM 0 is no longer supported by the OS.
I still have my IIGS & plan to keep it. If you have any IIGS questions, please email me.

I had one of these Woz's and gave it to my cousin. It also had running on it a very Mac like desktop os. It worked really well, at startup it also made this crazy screeching sound and displayed a screen that said something like transwarp...The computer was pretty wild.....

Thanks
