I'm not very experienced with OSX, so if there is an obvious solution to the following problem, please enlighten me.
I was creating a presentation for a school project using iMovie. The trash came to about 2.02GB and the actual project folder was around 7GB. I tried to delete the trash via iMovie, but it crashed during deletion. This then meant that I could no longer open the project (not an issue was it was already exported). I thought nothing more of it and went on to delete the project folder (right click, send to trash, empty trash).
However, the system doesn't seem to realise I've deleted these files and refuses to give me my 10GB back. Any obvious fixes or ideas?

Investigat an app called OmnoDiskSweeper which allows you to find out where all your space has disappeared to. It is a free download, but it slightly crippled if you do not buy a license. However it should allow you to find the offending file and then allow you to manually delete it.

Also, are you sure it's not just that the Finder hasn't updated the amount of free space available? (a log-out will definitely force an update, but I think something as simple as a "Get Info" on the volume will do that as well.)

One more thing to try....
Run MacJanitor to update the log files. There have been some reports that this can make a big difference in HD space, especially if there's been some process that ran amok and created all kinds or error logs.

Cron jobs usually sort that out for me. I think MacJanitor lets you run them. I just use the command line - sudo /etc/daily, hit return and type password. I use that to get back the space from my Virtual memory caches.

I had similar problem with iMovie 08
Didn't need to do any of the hidden files finding.
Just used iEmpty ....... "Superempty"
Google will find it for you
Worked a treat, and gave me back 10gb.
