Whenever my iBook restarts after crashing (ie fairly frequently) it seems to think it's 12.01 am, 01/01/04. Anyone know how I can fix this?

The iBook resets its time/date whenever the battery backed PRAM is reset. Given that the PRAM on the iBook uses the main battery for its power, if the main battery is disconnected or loose, then your system looses its PRAM settings. I wonder if your battery is loose (this might also be causing the crashes).
Otherwise, if you have to use the paperclip reset to recover from a crash, this ALSO resets the PRAM, so that would be why your date/time gets reset.

Actually, if you look it up in the Apple Tech Tips it says that pressing the hardware reset button up near the display will reset the clock that that date.

To to a restart when the thing has crashed, do not use the reset button; it wipes the PRAM. However, pressing command + control + power button works in all but the most dire of circumstances, then you have to revert to the old paperclip! :-(

Hope this helps

Just hold down the power button until the unit shuts off. This will always work. You can just turn it on again afterwards.
