Completely unexpected.
^That he was still alive, that is.
97 years is a bloody long time.

I'll miss Karl. From "Streetcar Named Desire" to "Gypsy" to "Patton" to his long running "Streets of San Francisco," he did a little bit of everything. He always came across as sincere and believable in every role, too.
But I agree with Face Ache-it was a surprise that he was still around. A good one though-lasting 97 years, with this particular run of years, is no mean feat.

Are you kidding? Everyone over 18 should know the American Express motto.

But connecting Karl Malden, who I think was FIRST to say it in a commercial? That's the "catch" I was talking about. Karl did those commercials in the 1970s and 1980s.

I wonder what the average MacNN age is?

I've often wondered this same thing.

I imagine it's around college age, maybe slightly older as many people have been around 5+ years now.

Overall MacNN, or just Lounge posters? I feel like I'm one of the youngest here in the Lounge, at least among regular posters.

I meant the Lounge (Not including the PL). I don't have any type of grasp on the rest of the forum.

Being able to figure out an "average age" accurately for any group of members would depend on how accurate everyone was in providing their birth date when they registered.
And none of us is anywhere near Karl's age...

At 37, I get it. I barely remember Streets of San Francisco, but On the Waterfront and Streetcar Named Desire are a couple of favorites, despite them being definitely before my time. I remember Karl Malden's AmEx commercials, Robert Conrad's battery commercials, and I 'm certain other 70s gems must be floating around my head.
My slightly younger wife and brothers and sisters-in-law wax nostalgic for the 80s cartoons and sitcoms, and I feel slightly out-of-sync. Perhaps I should've watched more tv growing up.
Even today, despite having given in and gotten a satellite after 10 years of rabbits ears, we are overwhelmed by the waves of mediocre tv series, reality, and specialty programming and are frequently left puzzled by those conversations and references with friends and coworkers.

Completely regardless of how little TV anybody watches, nobody "should" EVER watch more TV than they do, unless they're in the business.
