Hey all,

I was about 5 minutes away from wiping my hard drive on the MBP I bought yesterday and exchanging it for another copy.

I was in the middle of installing windows 7 on a bootcamp partition, and it seemed to freeze at the sigmatel audio portion of the bootcamp driver installation. I eventually had to hold the power button down to shut down.

When I went to reboot, it took at least 3-4 minutes to get to the login screen. Once logged in, the desktop took a long time, and when I tried to go to the "About this Mac" menu and then the system profiler, this took another 5-10 minutes (with nearly constant beach balling). I was trying to see the smart status of the hard drive and determine if it was failing on me.

Anyway, I did some reading (using another computer) and found some suggestions about repairing permissions, booting in safe mode (holding down shift at boot), and then rebooting normally. I ended up booting into safe mode and then repairing permissions in safe mode, and then rebooting again. (I did another permission repair just for good measure). After this, the performance seems to be back to normal.

I am posting the output of this permission repair because I am still concerned that there may be something wrong with this machine. Does anyone see anything in this log text that might explain the sluggish performance? Can bad permissions really bring a machine to a screeching halt? Does it seem that the problem during the windows bootcamp install could have cause this?

Here is the log:

Well why don't you install Smart Utility now and see what it says?

Actually, I ended up exchanging that machine for a replacement. Haven't seen an issue yet with the new one. (But I also haven't dared try installing Windows 7 on the Bootcamp partition, since both times that this started happening it seemed to happen first under Windows).

Maybe I will try that Smart Utility now and then take a chance on Windows 7 Bootcamp. I figure I should probably do it anyway while I am still in the return period.

Thanks
Jeff

Nothing that Boot Camp or Windows does should have any impact on your Mac partition, but if the Windows installer were to do something it would wipe out the Mac side, not corrupt permissions. I think whatever happened with your Windows attempted installation was coincidental or based on a common hardware cause.
