I have iMac 24 intel with Tiger and MacBook with Leopard. I wanted to develop an external hard drive for backup. One idea was to buy the Apple Time Machine hardware which would update my old Airport Utility and allow for backup. But, the problem is that the Time Machine would be attached to the iMac 24 with Tiger.

First question is...would I have to install Leopard on my iMac 24? If so, is this hard to do or have risks?

Second question is that by most forums, Seagate makes the best external hard drive but requires formatting using disk utility for Mac. I have looked up my disk utility and do not see format option. How do I format the external hard drive with the Tiger disk utility?
Switcher and damn glad...with iMac and PB who would not be happy!

How does the TC being "attached" (I assume you mean the iMac would be plugged into the TC with ethernet) have anything to do with the MacBook? The MacBook should have its own connection (wifi or wired) to the TC.

To format a directly attached disk, click on the drive in Disk Utility and then select the Partition tab.
