Hi all, I just purchased ARD2 for my mom, so that when I am at college I can help her. I was just curious if ARD2 supports encryption, and if so, do I need to turn it on?

If it doesn't, can I forward the ports through SSH and have it work?

I'm not sure about any of your questions, but I hope both you and your mom have very high speed connections. I am the Mac Specialist at a college, use ARD all the time (first 1.2 and now 2.0), and have had some serious issues connecting to some lab computers in the one building that is still hubbed and not switched. On 10 Mbit switched, ARD works fine, but anything less and it starts to balk at you. I have a server at home that I try to connect to over AirPort. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and realistically that's a 4-5 Mbit connection. Adding encryption will only increase your overhead. That's not to say it's a cool idea, but it might not work as you had dreamed. I'm not sure if Timbuktu has made any strides in being more bandwidth efficient, but you might look at them.

For those of you with ARD v2 already (I didn't think it was shipping yet)...how is it compared to v1.2? The feature-set sounds incredible and one helluva an upgrade...

Thoughts?

At home, I have the highest speed consumer broadband (optimum online, 10 mbit down, 1 mbit up). And at college I am on a 10 mbit switched network connected to internet2.

It's got a good feature set, that's for sure, but it's flaky. Plus, there's no backwards compatibility with older clients. On top of that, I've had mixed success updatomg old clients remotely. New builds that include ARD 2.0 from the beginning work pretty well. Plus having VNC is great for my systems team. They've been bugging me to put a VNC server on my Xserve G5 and I've been a bit reluctant. Now, everyone's happy.

They still haven't managed to get the interface right though, they really need to get the UI experts in to overhaul it.

Agreed. This one is almost more cluttered than 1.2, which wasn't great but at least it didn't try to throw any possible command into the toolbar. Also, let's ditch brushed metal for this. I know it's a playlist app and I'm happy with it on iTunes, iPhoto, Finder, etc., but I just can't handle it on ARD.
