I was thinking about the past again and decided to take a look the very first web page I ever created. This page was built around 1997.
I had to modify the code slightly so that it would work in Safari(I added the CSS so the background would show up). Notice the funky fly animated gifs and that I didn't know how to stop the background from tiling back then.

All of my old sites were on ZIP... and they were destroyed by water... I remember using 100k images... this was 1996 and that was alot of data at that time for an image. I was a newbie at photoshop and would just save the file as a jpg. Boy did I recieve a lot of complaints. Good times...
Now I release a new version of my site every year or so... The next one I will do almost completly in Flash... I look forward to starting on it.

First site I can remember making:
http://www.geocities.com/bballjew00/history/
It was done for a World History final project my freshman year of high school.
I've definitely come a long way since then, make my 'living' off design work.

I found mine recently. I plan on reposting it. Quite humorous, but for the time I still put a lot of effort into it.

I can't remember what my first site was. I think I started a Star Trek one with a star background. And I made a WarCraft II PUDs page. I actually put some thought into how that one looked. I think I still have it somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.
[edit] Found it. Seems like I should have known more grammar and spelling when I was 16. But I guess not.
One note about that page. I remember spending quite a long time searching the Net trying to figure out how to pre-load my JavaScript rollovers. I never did figure it out back then.

hehe, I'm pretty sure my original site is gone, but I've had quite a few little web sites, some of which may be still up. I'll have to look.
The first WYSIWYG HTML app I used would have to be Claris Homepage, from there I went to Adobe PageMill, then I got Dreamweaver (2 or 3.) While I was running OS X PB I used HTMLEdit( which I liked a lot.) Now I use Dreamweaver MX (6.0)

Heh, I still have mine backed up on a CD, I was going to post it on my current site because I have no time to work on anything new.
It may not have been much, but it caught the eye of the ad agency who did Bungie's original site (after I emailed them about where they were located), and they wanted me to fly to San Francisco for a job interview! That never happened since I had a guaranteed offer here a few weeks later, so I took it rather than take a chance on trying to move back to the US. Alas the road not taken, an SF web job in 1996...

Look in the WayBack Machine.

If I could remember the URL, I'd look it up. I remember something around 1993 or so when I started learning it.

If by late 1996 you mean 1997. Next time you should blur out the copyright date.
But still, it's pretty nice.

Actually no I mean 1996. That screen grab is just from 1997 and it looked the same for both years.

My first website was done when I was 12. It was called NetWaste... and was one of those sites which offer every free thing on the net (like random chat rooms), and have no discernible point to visiting

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

My first web page I did in 95 or 96 was ok. I don't think I have it anymore.
It was done in Pagemill. I actually liked that app.

I wrote a really crappy BBS (with no security whatsoever) in Apple BASIC way back in 1984 or something. Does that count?
That's pretty good for 1996.

I actually found most of the site on an old zip disk. The next and Be sections are sorta cool. Be actually wrote me and ask if they could post a link to my site from the official Be website.
In 1996-1997 I was getting about 9000 unique visitors a month.

Archive.org didn't cache my page from 1994
Anyways, I've always hated animated GIFs. Kind of proud of that now being a web designer with ten years experience
Edit: Actually that was 1994! I do have ten years experience. W00T!

Good stuff. I can't remember any URLs. I didn't put my first little corny website online until '98 or '99. Ah, Bondi iMac and OS 8.5 (crash-prone load of crap) or 8.6. Good times.

Mine is long gone..
.. it had rainbow <hr>'s
.. and a jpeg that was 1024 pixels wide
.. and a 3d rotating at sign
.. and 3d shaded bullets
.. and tables with default shadow borders
.. and a construction worker icon saying "under construction"
.. and nothing of use on it

My first site used the Mac barber pole progress bar as the sign for "under construction". Gee, what a genius I was.

Don't worry about it, until 1998 people expected to see one on every website. I think people just had "frequent updates" confused with under construction.

Archive.org doesn't seem to have any of my first domain sites, and I don't remember the URLs to any of the Geocities/Tripod type ones anymore.
I do remember that my first site was made in 1998 when I was eight years old and was hosted on Tripod. I used one of their templates and posted little short "stories" that I had written that were usually two sentences long.
Wow, I've come a long way since then...I now own 30+ domain names and make about $1000 a month from my websites.
A few current ones, if anyone is interested:
http://www.abiteofapple.com/ (an online Mac community)
http://www.free-smileys.com/ (over 3000 unique visitors a day and #4 in Google for "free smileys")
http://www.adnetworkreviews.com/ (reviews and tips to help webmasters monitize their traffic)
http://www.scifience.net/ (a crappy, ad-infested PHP-Nuke site whose whole purpose is to pay its $200 a month hosting bill for my Mac freeware)
http://www.puzzle-universe.com/ (puzzles)
I remember I used to have a Pokemon site, a video game site, and a site for a baseball trading card game that flopped.
I still want to learn CSS, but never seem to get around to it. The best I've done with CSS is this: http://www.scifiencenetworks.com/?enliten which is based off of a CSS Zen Garden design that I tried to pick through and learn from.

My first website (about 5 years ago) was something called 'gridbypass'.
In my school, and all others schools in the county (Herts, UK), internet access was severely restricted. Access to games, webmail, non-conformist news sources, and anything not considered educational was, or would be blocked. The barrier blocking all the fun stuff on the net was called 'The Grid'.
I got fed up with not being able to access my e-mail so I set about creating a website, and accompanying anonymous proxy. To cut a long story short, this became hugely popular in my school, with kids on porn sites, playing games, reading their e-mails in lessons...Turns out, the school didn't really appreciate my website, first got it blocked by The Grid, then they suspended my network access for ages
The last version (about 4 years old), which was considerably improved, was hosted on geocities, and still remains there today (although it no longer works since the anonymous proxy has changed!)

Here is the travesty of a page that I made during my first year of teaching, 1995. I made it using ClarisWorks 4.0 and made the drawing of the battery using Canvas. Once I got it up, I never updated it, I'm such a slacker!! Enjoy
