Anyone ever come across something like this before? It's an eBay auction for a book detailing military awards of Germany 1933-1945. Here's what I get when I try to view the page;
"Unfortunately, access to this particular category or item has been blocked due to legal restrictions in your home country. Based on our discussions with concerned government agencies and eBay community members, we have taken these steps to reduce the chance of inappropriate items being displayed. Regrettably, in some cases this policy may prevent users from accessing items that do not violate the law. At this time, we are working on less restrictive alternatives. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we hope you may find other items of interest on eBay."

The book itself was published and sold in the U.S. so I'm having a hard time believing this "legal restrictions in your home country" crap.

Who can view it and in what country are you located? Are just us Yankees excluded?

Edit: Damn I'm slow today. I forgot the link. Sorry 'bout that.

Indeed! Sorry about that.

I've added it to my original post, and again here for the ones who immediately scroll down without reading through the first post.

Oh yeah? Pull the other one. Are you serious? Would you mind posting a low-res screengrab of the part of the listing showing the title and seller info? I don't even know where the seller is located.

Thanks for the image, manofsteal.

That is the first edition of that book and the full title is "For Fhrer and Fatherland: Military Awards of the Third Reich". It appears the the seller has deliberately omitted any words that might be flagged by eBay's Gesta... er, censoring system. In any event, it's still blocked for many of those in the U.S.

It's strange as just a few weeks ago an auction for the same book was visible and went through to completion. Do you think eBay has an army of snitches looking for and reporting this type of material?

By the way, it's a great book for anyone seriously interested in military awards. Scale photos and documentation on everything. I wanted to get a second copy to give to someone as a gift.

Censorship it totally retarded. I mean it is a book with nothing graphic.

tooki, i don't know what your deal is with this, but PLEASE at least just take off the image tags instead of your standard drivel about how inline images shouldn't be too big. at least having a link there still serves a purpose. i mean, yeah, it's stellar that you're on this crusade, but what's the point in not preserving the link to the image? often they are quite relevant to the thread at hand.

i know i, for one, wanted to take another look at that thing.

I'm beginning to think it's more that some IP ranges are blocked rather than whole countries, which is even more idiotic. I can only imagine that some people complained to eBay and this caused eBay to simply block certain content from an entire IP range.

For anyone who wants to view such an auction in the future, try a web-based proxy server. I tried this early this morning and it worked.

Thanks to all who reported their results. It was interesting.

It has to be based on IP ranges. Doesn't make sense I can view it at work, but not at home.

Oooooh ... that is so rude! Frechheit! Take that back ... now! If I were in "Schwoaba-Lndle" I'd surely know - we folks north of the "Sptzli-Faction" take these things very seriously (I would think phoenixboy knows what I'm talking about)!

After all, that would be like some dude calling you a "Torfstecher" simply because you live north of Frankfurt ("Main", not "Oder")

Hold the phone dude... I live in Munich and what the heck is north of Frankfurt? I thought civilization just stops there, other than that there's just wasteland and uncivilized territory (much like we Americans think Canada is like )
Anyhow, as far as I'm concerned, Bavaria hence civilization ends at the "Weiwurschtquator" which for us Bavarians is the Danube. Regensburg is our last outpost, that's pretty much it

Btw, is it obvious that I've been living in Munich too long? ALL HAIL THE BAVARIAN EMPEROR!

I'm about 45 minutes north of where the item is being sold, but I can't view the page. Tunneled into the PC at work in Manhattan, and I can view it from there.

Hi everyone,

I came across this forum searching for a solution to the problem some of you have been having, namely some eBay items showing as "invalid" due to "restrictions in your country".

As far as I can see, the problem lies with Safari, not with your location or IP address. (Try it out, folks!) Pages which are "invalid" in Safari load fine in IE, Mozilla and Firefox on my Mac. (I'm using 10.3.8, Safari 1.2.4).

So, has anyone a solution yet, other than the ungainly switching of browsers whenever the problem occurs?

Joe.

Link me an example and I could try to see if it helps to switch the user agent under the debug menu in safari (you can activate that with TinkerTool)!
