I want to back up my library, it will take about 2 DL DVD discs is there a way to to do this from iTunes? Is there a way to make it spilt the library so it will fit on 2 separate dvd's (outside of doing it manually?

Have you tried "File" > "Back Up to Disk"? Presumably that will allow you to span a library backup across several dvds; it would be mildly idiotic otherwise considering the size of most peoples libraries.

I'm sure I saw such an option in iTunes 6 (for Windows). Are you SURE you don't have that option, even if it's not under File?

And why not upgrade? The horror stories have gone away from what I can tell-the things that were really broken (very few, by the way) were fixed quite a while ago.
