"slam dunk" because I didn't look at every image on the internet? Get over yourself.

I maintain that there's something fishy about a youtube video showing a phone that doesn't do anything with a weird "inferno" screen. I maintain that I haven't seen anything that links that "inferno" screen phone with whatever phone/pile of whatever is sitting on a blue towel. That's all. Nothing to get all "pwned" about.

MacRumors suggest that:
When turning on the iPhone, only the inferno screen is showed and some information that look like command lines. Perhap this screen showed up not because of Apple remotely locked the machine but the phone is locked locally after a time interval without the user entering a certain code.
Various Apple prototypes have had odd boot screens like this, so it's not terrifically unusual. Also, iFixit have done an article on the components that are in the photo.

Why leaked prototypes are a real problem for Apple:

Yes, it looks like ass by comparison, and it appears to require a pen (?), but dammit, it's out a month or two before Apple even had a chance to hit the market with their new design.

That phone isn't really a problem for Apple.

Yeah, people who buy that phone weren’t going to buy the current or upcoming iPhone anyway. And it’s not like people will be all “ZOMG awesome!” when they see that, then think Apple copied from it.

The problem is that there is a product out bearing key elements of Apple's next product design before Apple has even brought it to market.

The next one that shows up won't be as crappy-looking as this one.

Why is that a problem?

I think the leak is the problem. Clones are meaningless.

Then Apple should get off their thumbs and release the next iPhone early.

Sure, but if the official launch is targeted for June (as rumored), then it's been "done" for weeks now. There are no hardware changes that could be made at this point for a June release.

Well, I figure Apple's got to lose at least one more iPhone so as to get even more headlines before the launch...

DigiTimes rumormongering as well. iPhone HD to get 960x480 IPS screen with fringe-field switching. Thanks to a 33% thinner display assembly there's supposedly room for a larger battery, too.

I posted this link about Digitimes in another thread, but I figure it's worth reposting here:

"Although Digitimes is closely read by Western reporters, its track record is mixed at best. Three years ago, MacRumors' editor Arnold Kim briefly stopped linking to Digitimes because the accuracy of its reports over a 5-year period (14 rumors total. 1 True. 10 Wrong. 2 Possible. 1 Unknown) was so poor."

10 million Verizon iPhones? - Apple 2.0 - Fortune Tech

Of course, maybe their accuracy has improved since then, but I rather think there's a good deal of money involved in high-traffic rumors--so, all the rumor sites have to do is make them somewhat credible.

AppleInsider have picked up the same Digitimes story about IPS FFS screens, and also said Foxconn are making 24 million devices.

AppleInsider | Foxconn to ship 24M next-gen iPhones with improved displays in 2010

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Well, here's hoping that the rumors are true...

but I really think they all quote each other as sources, after all each rumor site is really an "industry insider" so how could they go wrong? and if enough rumor sites say that something is true, then surely that's indeed what Apple is going to produce?

To keep this up to date, some 'alleged' new iPhone white front facings have been shown, to go along with a white back.
AppleInsider | Alleged iPhone 4G part suggests Apple could offer white front panel

Somebody on macrumors mocked up a photo of the Gizmodo handset to have a white front based on this part.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Just like I never considered white for my 3G I wouldn't get this white one either. Looks like a restroom indeed.

Apple's current theme on the Mac is Al/black and white=cheap. There used to be black as a high-end option while white was dominant. I was surprised when they reversed that on the 3G and 3GS with the white option on the high-end.

I'd like to see what this phone would look like in all-Al, kind of like the current iMac. With all these shiny black plastic Android phones Al might be an option to stand out a bit more.

My surprise was mainly because on the Mac had Apple previously used white to indicate cheap. Black was used to indicate the 'expensive' option. Same with the iPod. Then came the iPhone 3G and all of a sudden they chose white as an option on the high-end model only. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one surprised by that move.

That said, shiny white still makes your gadget look like a miniature toilet.

The image at the top shows the iPhone not entirely closed. That might make then button look more recessed than it actually is.

I can't remember a time in the last 7 years that a new crop of Apple products has struck me as cheap looking. Ugly or strange, maybe, but never cheap.

You find the white model cheap looking or the new design in general?

I'm liking the new design, it also appears to be less wobbly on flat surfaces (no round back). That could also be a negative, because a curved back is easier to grasp... we'll see.

I hope all the rumored features are true, 'cause I am ready to buy.

I'm underwhelmed by the design, so we'll see if a combination of the new features in OS 4 with the new hardware is enough to convince me to get one.

You said that in jest, right? The day we see removable face plates on an Apple product is the day we know we're dealing with a fundamentally different company. That would be a bigger departure than the Intel switch.

I'll just leave it at that, since we all know now that you're simply not OLD enough to remember the drama when Apple allied with the One True Enemy and abandoned the Macintosh CPU architecture.

I'm not going to take the bait, Harlot. I was a good little Apple soldier and hated Big Blue with a passion until the day the PPC alliance was announced. I don't know why you're harping on that side comment I made. I've even stopped calling the Intel switch a defection!

I like the white, baby blue, and red. I'd take any of those three.

Probably not until 2011 though, because of my contract. I don't think they'll allow upgrades until 2.5 years after my contract started.

Sorta, but not really. The expensive option was aluminum.
