I have an iPhone 2G with 3.1 OS and baseband (Modem firmware) 04.05.04_G.
I know I can jailbreak it but can I unlock it too? I read that any phone upgraded to 3.1 cannot be unlocked. But my baseband is not the newest one. Is there any chance for me to unlock this phone? If so, how do I go about doing this?

iClarified - iPhone - How to Select an iPhone Unlock/Jailbreak Tutorial is a good fundamental tutorial.
In a nutshell:
- Download latest RedSnow, iPhone1,1 v3.1 firmware IPSW download, as well as both baseband files (3.6 and 4.9 or whatever they are).
- Use RedSnow to build an IPSW including a baseband update, even if you’ve done this before.
- Put phone in DFU (recovery) mode.
- Use iTunes to load custom IPSW.
- Commence happiness.
- Use Cydia to install the “Push Fix” utility from the cydia.iphoneil.net repository to restore the ability to use push notifications.

I downloaded redsn0w 0.8 and iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw files. I could not find baseband files. I ran redsn0w and browsed to the ipsw file. But redsn0w did not recognize that ipsw file. I downloaded the file from torrent again, but it still did not recognize it.

I could never get quickpwn to work properly. Has it now been updated for OS 3.1?
