Help. I'm a product of the American school system! I have a problem that I should be able to figure out but I can't. Here it is in verbal math test style:

Our rent here is $965.00 total, we split that between everyone. Rent is due today. (11/15)

Neal moved in back on the 1st, so he owes half a months rent, plus this coming month.
When Neal moved in Jim moved downstairs, so halfway through the month his rent was cut in half. But now Jim pays half rent we pay for the upcoming month and all months from now on. He paid the normal amount for the last month, half of which he lived downstairs.
Pete and I stayed put, so no change besides whatever our adjusted rent is now for 11/15 -12/15

How much does each person owe?

the numbers that matter are $322 and $161. you can get it from there, because i don't know what the hell you're talking about, but i'm going to go out on a limb and assume that neal and jim never lived in the house at the same time.

1/2 Neal + 1/2 Jim + Pete + I =3
965/3 = $321.67
The rest is left as an exercise for the product of congressionally mandated testing.
(That ain't really a public school system problem.)

n + j + p + c = $965
$965 / 4 = $241.25 normal rent

n = 1/2 ($241.25) = $120.62
j = ($241.25 + $120.62) / 2 = $180.94

$120.62 + $180.94 + p + c = $965
p + c = $663.44
p = $331.72
c = $331.72

Neal $120.62
Jim $180.94
Pete $331.72
CIA $331.72

Your welcome.

That's wrong.
Neal should be 1.5 months rent, not 0.5

Here's what should have been paid by who (assuming nobody owes anyone anything)...

-- last month --

N: 137.86
J: 229.46
P: 298.69
C: 298.69

-- onwards --

N: 275.71
J: 137.86
P: 275.71
C: 275.71

Split last month into two halves. 482.50 each
Divided first half by three (three peeps paying equal). 160.83 each.
Divided second half by seven (three peeps @ 2x and one at 1x): 137.86 (N,P,C), 68.63 (J)

Because Republicans keep a track of things when they happen and therefore don't get into these situations in the first place?

Scrap my previous calcs. Was assuming that Jim had already paid some (whatever), so made it complicated.

How much does each person owe?
Future Months:
I, P, N: 275.71
J: 137.86
----------
$965

This Month:
1st half of the month =
I: (965/3)/2=160.5
P: 160.5
J: 160.5

2nd half of the month =
I, P: (275.71/2) = 137.86
J: (0.5*137.86) = 68.93
N: 275.71/2 = 137.86

Add each person's half month amounts:

I, P: 298.36
J: 229.43
N: 137.86
----------
965ish..

...man, took longer to type out than to solve...

I got it slightly wrong the first time though. Read it wrong and got mixed up with the following line:

Couldn't figure out who was in credit or arrears (so ignored that).

Someone should make an app for this kind of thing.
