My daughter sent me an attachment (from a PC platform) called "video 1.avi.
When I tried to open it, I received this message window:

"You may experience problems playing a video track in 'Video 1.avi" because the required compressor could not be found. Would you like to close the movie or continue?"

Choosing "continue" just a large blank QT screen opened.
What compressor is being referred to? How do I even know what to look for?

It sounds like what happened is that the person who made the movie used a hardware compression scheme when they saved it. When you create video on your computer you have the option of using different forms of video compression. When you have a video capture card which has built in hardware compression you can use that to save time and quality. But if you use the hardware compression and move it to another computer, it will not play without that hardware to decompress the video. So unless you have the hardware you're SOL. You just have to delete it.

P.S. Some avi movies for the pc use a custom software compression that is only available for windows. So they also will not run on the macintosh. Sorry.

When you get that error due to an .AVI file, you are most likely missing the Indeo� Video extension. You can find out more info here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/indeo/

Jim and Gromit. Thanks for your response. If you'll notice my second posting (just below my original question) I had solved my problem. Perhaps I should have mentioned how. I found out that there were three Indeo Video index codes that had to be downloaded in order to be able to open "avi" suffixes. I did so and was able to open the "Video. avi" attachment.
