The third iteration of Sony's RX100 digital camera has been unveiled by the company. The Cyber-shot RX100 III improves upon the design of the preceding RX100 II by pairing the same 20.1-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor with the Bionz X image processor, used in the Alpha A77, which is said to enhance picture quality and reduce area-specific noise for low-light shots.

On the front is a Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T 24-70mm F1.8-2.8 lens with a built-in three-stop Neutral Density filter, with the camera offering a burst of 10fps, 1/2000 sec shutter speed and an ISO range of 125 to 12,800, as well as 50Mbps high bit-rate Full HD video with XAVC S support and a 4K still image output. The rear 3-inch 1.2M-dot flip-up screen is joined by a pop-up electronic viewfinder, with the 0.39-inch, 1440k-dot display hidden inside the camera, as well as NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity for use with mobile apps and the PlayMemories Camera App range.

Sony will be shipping the RX100 III in June, priced at $800.

Those looking for a good point and shoot camera, the RX100 will more than fill your need. The inclusion of an EVF makes it an even more desirable camera.

Using the EVF has advantages. In bright sun the LCD can get washed out, that's not an issue with the EVF. If you are in a situation where you need to steady the camera, the EVF provides a third anchor point.

If you are ready to step up from a cell phone camera, the RX100 line is a great place to start.

We each have our own deal-breakers I usually take an iPhone pic at any location I go to, so GPS tagging is not an issue for me. Nice, but not a dealbreaker...
