I have often wondered what was the all time biggest "one hit wonder" song. It's a silly question but my curiousity compells me to seek out the answer. How would I go about finding the answer? By biggest I mean what one raked in the most money. I figure that someone, or some band, had the all time one biggest hit and then just sailed off into the sunset to count their money.

Perhaps there is a music site on the Internet that is be able to credibly answer this question, or perhaps someone reading this forum already knows the answer to this.

Well according to VH1's numerous shows on the subject, the #1 one hit wonder was "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil. I'm not sure what criteria they used to determine this, so I'm not sure if this qualifies as your #1 grossing song, but anyway, thats what VH1 said.

VH1 says that it was "Macarena". I never would have thought of that.

What's a Sharona anyway?

I thought "Spirit In The Sky" would have been a lot higher up the list than VHS1 puts it (85).

Ya, the song is one thing, but you're right, the video took the cake. The Safety Dance video, to its credit, featured some pretty awful medival costumes, too, if I recall correctly.

I play that whenever I want to torture someone. If people hang out in my room, and I want them out... but they refuse to go... put the damn song on... within 3 minutes... gone....

Funny though. Reminds me of Polly Shores 1 funny movie... Bio Dome (it really was funny, if you see it on video, not the cut up network version).

Charlene - I've Never Been To Me

A One Hit Wonder largely because the song was so bad that when Charlene threatened a follow up single in 1981, NATO threatened to strike any host country.

I dare you to listen to it.

Ryko put out a compilation a few years ago called "Seventies Party Killers" for exactly that purpose. It's full of turds like The Night Chicago Died and Billy Don't be a Hero. It'll clear a room like nobody's business.

I don't know how much money it's made, but Gary Numan's "Cars" has been a chart hit in all four decades so far, and continues to make him nice money today. That'd be my vote.

(Of course, Numan only qualifies as a one-hit wonder in the US.)
Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them.
