Pretty worthless announcement since google didn't provide any screenshots. I think Google entering the OS scene is a very good thing™

Official Google Blog: Introducing the Google Chrome OS

Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010...

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year...

For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform...
So initially a netbook system, open source, mainly for web/email heavy use. Will be interesting to see how well it does against XP/Linux on netbooks, and Windows/OS X on home desktops. I can't se it being taken on that much on pro or business systems.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I think that is the Google equivalent of "We Are Coming..." (Torchwood - Children of Earth reference )

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Except when you do a file search for an image on your own machine and it randomly inserts pictures from your "art" directory into the results. Along with some ads for viagra. And a picture of your house. And your medical records.

Google needs to be put back in the box and at least try to remember that it's supposed to be a search engine (and come up with a new methodology which doesn't see the first zillion results of any search being filled with blog entries and retail aggregators).

Perhaps renaming your `art' directory helps?

Speaking of the Google OS, anyone heard if Google might make a Twitter app for that too? Not to derail the thread, but I'm sure the Google OS is going to be good.

Well, I might. At least until the EU pops its head up and does to them what it's doing to MS. Surprised it hasn't happened already, to be honest.

More OS choices is a Good Thing. An "ad supported" OS is not. Neither is the possibility of "information mining" your private data.

I would like to be certain that I would not have to deal with either of these issues before I even consider what sorts of uses a Google OS might be useful for. Without such reassurance, I'll pass.

The EU doesn't understand Google yet. Give them a few more years.

If its open sauce with a good license, then someone will just modify the source code and strip out the Google-shite. Hopefully. And yeah, ONE ad pops up and I'd get rid of it.

The announcement seems quite premature to me, as I'd like to start playing with it now but will have to wait a year or so I guess. I can't see switching to it full time, but who knows.

This is just the start of cloud computing. Log into whoever to run apps for a fee. Kind of strange that a board member of apple comes out with a product that competes head on with apple. I thought board members are supposed to find and/or work for better ways to improve your company your chairing. But looking at apple's new server farm going up, I think apple will be doing this too in the near future.

If all of the apps for it will run on existing standards-based browsers, then what's the point?

Question: Should Google OS become very popular, will they be forced by the EU to bundle IE in it ?

I'm hoping they'll release a beta sometime this year. I'd love to try it out on my eeePC 701.

It appears that the goal is to make it much less resource-intensive than conventional operating systems. This means that you could use much cheaper, low-performing hardware. Forget the Atom; use a cheapy ARM CPU instead! It could allow netbook prices to drop even more (although $250 is already pretty cheap).
