Icon Disappearances

	Why is it that when i sometimes press the volume/brightness/eject (aka all function) keys on my 17 inch pbook, the icons sometimes appear, and sometimes they do not? I have searched the System Preferences and just cannot find how to get them back unless I reboot. Is there a way I can do this without rebooting? Thanks!
