Hi all. I have a dial-up connection to the Internet, and in the Internet pane of the AirPort Admin Utility I have "Disconnect if idle" set to "10 minutes." That's so I don't accidentally incur extra charges from my ISP.

It used to work fine. Recently, though, I noticed that it's no longer auto-disconnecting. If I leave it connected, when I come back an hour later it'll still be connected, even if all applications are closed.

I have no problems with my connections otherwise.

Is something screwy with the AirPort software, or is there some background Internet traffic that's keeping it connected?

I have an AEBS with 5.1.3 firmware, used with two computers with AirPort 3.1.1 software: a 12" PowerBook with an AirPort Extreme card, and my iMac DV 400 with an AirPort card. Both computers are on OS X 10.2.8. I first noticed the problem under 5.1.1/3.1.1; the 5.1.3 upgrade has seemed to have no effect.

Thanks.

It sounds like you're running a program in the background that's generating some online activity every so often-less than your 10 minute cut off time. Review what is running, and whether or not anything is supposed to be touching base with the Internet.

Thanks for the reply. As I said, this happens even with all applications closed. In fact, I can shut both computers down for an hour, then fire one back up and the connection will still be active. A check of Process Viewer shows nothing amiss that I can tell.

I can disconnect manually with no problem, but I'd like to get the auto-disconnect working again.

Nothing in your results rings alarm bells for me. Hmmm. Ok, I'm stumped. Have you done a good reset on the AEBS; it could just need a good "whack across the skull" to get it working again.
