Pennsylvania woman dies with arm trapped in donation bin - BBC News
Some select quotes:
A 56-year-old Pennsylvania woman has died after her arm became trapped in a charity donation bin.
Judith Permar was dropping off clothes into the metal structure when a step stool she was using gave way and she was left hanging.
Her black Hummer was nearby with its engine still running.

Siri is still so incredibly stupid. I'm in my car using voice control asking Siri how far am I to xx city. Siri stupidly says that cannot show maps with screen off. I unlock my screen and Siri still cannot show me.
The screen unlock doesn't matter much. I don't want to SEE the route to xx city, I just want an approximate distance of how far I am away to xx city to be told audibly.

The irony is I couldn't care less about the game, I only check to see if it's going to preempt the radio.
"People still listen to the radio?"
Judging by the ratings, not really.

They were admitted with handwritten boarding passes. I'm thinking this is a graft/bribery case, where the airline wasn't paid. Someone pocketed the money, and only got caught when the plane came up overfull this time.

This thread doesn't have nearly enough Korea!
Here's some random ridiculousness of the day from almost 50 years ago.
https://en.www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axe_murder_incident
There was a tree in the way of an observation post on the DMZ, and us trying to cut it down ended up with the North Koreans burying the hatchet in our forehead.
The "rules" of the DMZ say "no guns", hence the odd weaponry.
I don't want to give too much away, but one of the workarounds to the "no guns" rule ends up being claymore mines strapped to the chests of a South Korean special forces unit.
Little known Phun Phactâ„¢: Korea totally has Japan beat when it comes to weird shit.

Little known Phun Phactâ„¢: Korea totally has Japan beat when it comes to weird shit.
Cut the tree down with overwhelming force.
"In addition, a 64-man South Korean Special Forces company accompanied them, armed with clubs and trained in Tae Kwon Do, supposedly without firearms. However, once they parked their trucks near the Bridge of No Return, they started throwing out the sandbags that lined the truck bottoms, and handing out M16 rifles and M79 grenade launchers that had been concealed below.[2] Several of the special forces men also had claymore mines strapped to their chests with the firing mechanism in their hands, and were shouting at the North Koreans to cross the bridge.[14][15]
A U.S. Infantry company in 20 utility helicopters and seven Cobra attack helicopters circled behind them. Behind these helicopters, B-52 Stratofortresses, with some described as "nuclear ready" came from Guam escorted by U.S. F-4 Phantom IIs from Kunsan Air Base and South Korean F-5 and F-86 fighters were visible flying across the sky at high altitude. At Taegu Air Base, F-111 bombers of the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing out of Mountain Home Air Force Base, were stationed, and F-4 Phantoms C and D from the 18th TFW Kadena Air Base and Clark Air Base were also deployed. The aircraft carrier USS Midway task force had also been moved to a station just offshore."
Now THAT's how you cut a tree down.

This guy is so fired!
A police sharpshooter accidentally wounded two people as French President Francois Hollande was giving a speech in the south-west of France on Tuesday, a police source said.
The shooter was on a roof about a hundred meters (109 yards) from a tent where Hollande was speaking. During a change of position his gun fired accidentally, the source said.
A loud noise like a gunshot is heard on video footage of the president's speech. "I hope there is nothing serious," Hollande said, then looked to his left and said, "I don't think so".
The shot wounded two people in their legs; the injuries were not life-threatening, a prefect of police for Charente region Pierre N'Gahane told BFM-TV.

And yes ..... the drivers should have won. It seems to me this company was trying to get over on them by deliberately misreading something that is written very clearly. To the tune of $10 million in unpaid overtime. Because there is nothing "ambiguous" about it IMO.
1) You always separate items in the list by a comma except for the last one.
2) Every item in the list is a verb (ending with "ing"). The word "distribution" is the object of the preposition "for". As is "shipment". Forming the prepositional phrase "for packing or distribution" which is tied to the last verb in the list "packing".
How is there anything "controversial" about this?
If you have ever doubted the importance of the humble Oxford comma, let this supremely persnickety Maine labor dispute set you straight.
A group of dairy drivers argued that they deserved overtime pay for certain tasks they had completed. The company said they did not. An appeals court sided with the drivers, saying that the guidelines themselves were made too ambiguous by, you guessed it, a lack of an Oxford comma.
This is what the law says about activities that do NOT merit overtime pay. Pay attention to the first sentence:
The canning, processing, preserving, freezing, drying, marketing, storing, packing for shipment or distribution of:
(1) Agricultural produce;
(2) Meat and fish products; and
(3) Perishable foods.
That's a lot of things! But if we're getting picky, is packing for shipment its own activity, or does it only apply to the rest of that clause, i.e. the distribution of agricultural produce, etc.?
See, all of this could be solved if there were an Oxford comma, clearly separating "packing for shipment" and "distribution" as separate things!
According to court documents, the drivers distribute perishable food, but they don't pack it.
Yes, this is the real argument they made. And they really won.
"Specifically, if that[list of exemptions] used a serial comma to mark off the last of the activities that it lists, then the exemption would clearly encompass an activity that the drivers perform," the circuit judge wrote.
It did not, and since the judge observed that labor laws, when ambiguous, are designed to benefit the laborers, the case was settled.
"For want of a comma, we have this case," the judge wrote.
The irony in this ruling is, there are actual state guidelines on how Maine lawmakers draw up their documents. And they do NOT include Oxford commas! The humanity!
To be fair, there is also guidance on how to avoid unclear language that could, say, help an impressively pedantic group of drivers get what they were owed.
An Oxford comma changed this court case completely - CNN.com

I read a novel once where the world was a spaceship which looked like a giant snake.
The heroes travel into the brain of the snake in an attempt to discover why the world is slowly drifting into the sun.
Turns out the people who drive the snake are engaged in a holy war over whether the manual says to put in snake fuel A and then snake fuel B, or snake fuel A and B at the same time.
Even though it was obvious putting them both in at once was what was causing it to drift into the sun, faction "A and B at the same time" had won out because no one had a response to the argument people who can build a space snake would know how to properly use an Oxford comma if one was supposed to be there.

From the same novel, the god who created the universe with the snake world would complain about how irritating other gods were when they would get together to play canasta.
Especially the one who was "I created my universe in a week. How long did yours take?" and all "my son this" and "my son that".

I'm not posting this because the homeowner shot and killed 3 teens in masks who broke into his home. They made a some very poor decisions that led to their untimely demise so that's on them. I'm not even posting this because he used an AR-15. As I've stated many times I'm fairly center-right on gun control so I have no problem with the man owning that type of weapon. Especially for home defense. The reason why I'm posting this is because the woman driving the getaway vehicle was charged with felony murder! I can understand charging her with burglary even though she technically didn't steal anything herself. I can even understand charging her with felony murder if her cohorts had killed someone in the commission of this crime. But to charge her with murder when her cohorts are the ones who got themselves killed just seems like a bridge too far.

accessory to robbery perhaps, but unless she enticed them to do the robbery, full knowing the homeowner was home and armed... I don't see how murder can be on her.

Folklore sometimes did happen. Buffy's predecessors must have been elsewhere in the world those centuries.
Medieval (dark ages) village in England regularly dug up fresh graves. To chop the heads off and/or burn the bodies. To make sure they kept resting and didn't change their minds. Then reburied them.
The village studied doesn't exist today - everyone er, moved away. That's the assumption anyway. It's also possible the villagers eventually stopped taking precautions.

If only she'd been eating raw nuts and vegetables, right?
A stupid tragedy. She was attended very promptly by nursing students and EMTs. Apparently the heimlich doesn't work on soft pancakey foods.
