What's wrong with my 5G iPod video (30gb)?

Sometimes when I connect it to the sync cable on my iMac (Intel Core Duo, Rev A) the iPod turns on then freezes at the Do Not Disconnect screen.

It then doesn't appear in the iTunes devices list, and I have to manually reset the iPod (hold down menu+centre button), then it will appear correctly.

I've tried reinstalling iTunes and by resetting the iPod but it still occasionally happens.

Any ideas? It's out of warranty already...
