My BTO AlBook will ship on or before 4/27. I ordered with 1 512 memory module. Where is the best and least expensive place to purchase a 1 GB memory module. Also, there seems to be about a $300 price difference between a 512 and a 1gb module. Is 1.5 overkill for everyday use for the extra $300? I am replacing a 800mhz ibook. Cannot wait until next week.

1GB memory prices have dropped from $799.99 to $319 in the past 10 months or so
http://www.18004memory.com/cart/addc...1&itemTYPE=cat
Go buy a $100 512MB Stick now before they go up any more and hold out until the 1GB prices are reasonable.
Then again 1.0 vs 1.5 may be worth the $300 if you need the absolute fastest on the market . If you are upgrading from an 800Mhz powerbook... this is most likely not your situation.

18004Memory has a 512mb for $119 and a 1gb for $349, so the price difference is only $230 from them.
Crucial has a 512mb for $123.99 and a 1gb for $435.99, so the price difference is $312 from them.
I am sure I could save some $$ and purchase the 512mb module and be satisfied with the speed of new PB, but for a $230 difference, I would have to consider a 1gb module to finish off what is already an expensive investment, but one which I cannnot wait to use. Of course, I am not sure if there is any difference in the memory supplied by either company,
Thanks to all for the info.

I buy RAM from Other World Computing, and have for a good number of years. In April, I got my first dead stick from them. They shipped me a new one, I verified it worked, and then I sent them the bad one back. Simple, no hassles (except for the short wait for the new stick.)
They aren't the cheapest, but I don't worry about any purchases I've made through them. That's the best investment.
I'll probably be getting a 1 GB SODIMM from them in the next month or two. Last I looked, they have them for $360. Not a bad price considering the service behind it. Hopefully it'll come down by the time my birthday comes.

Can I buy a a single 1GB DIMM and remove one of the 256 DIMM's, taking the total to 1.280GB? Or do they have to match in size? 2x256, 2x512, 2x1G

This place, "deal ram" has 1GB 200 pin/ PC2700 modules for $295.00. 100% guranteed and lifetime warranty. Not too bad.
Sometimes they offer free shipping. I'm ordering mine tonight for my 17"PB.

Why did you pay $319.00? I just checked 1800memorytogo and they are asking $295.00 for the Samsung 1GB PC 2700 200 pin modules.

I just went back to 1800memorytogo site and it appears that the same samsung module is listed in various ways with three prices: $295.00 for generic pc memory and $319.00 and $349.00 for compatible Powerbook memory. All 3 modules appear to be the same, but more expensive under apple/mac searches. I will have to ask for credit for difference. Thanks for pointing this our.

Here's more of a technical question about the RAM. Anyone know if one brand of ram consumes less power than another?

One thing: be careful about where you get your memory from. It's happened to me many times that I've bought a module at a great price only to find out it's dead one year after buying it (which, in my experience, coincidentally occurred when the 1 year warranty expired).
Memory problems can be a real pain to track down sometimes. Sometimes you waste more time (translate: money) trying to figure out what exactly is going on, where the extra few bucks spent on something decent (i.e. lifetime warranty) would be cheaper.

Now 1-800-4memory has changed their links so they no longer have the $295 price. Wonderful.
